Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips Tell a Story About a Bad Weekend at Comic-Con

There's a lot of this kind of thing about right now. Crime thrillers set at comic conventions. Back in the day I was in one, the comic book CSI: Dying In The Gutters. I was in another, the Leverage novel The Con Job. Even Brooklyn 99 did one (I was not in that). There's something about people who usually spend their lives alone, being thrust together that suggests criminal actions may occur. And there's been a few comics like that of late, including The Long Con and Cover.

In July, in time for San Diego Comic-Con (and oh yes, this means the San Diego PR has started) Image Comics will be publishing an expanded version of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' most recent Criminal storyline in its own hardcover. Bad Weekend, a crime thriller set at a comic con, will be published with new material, in time to be sold at San Diego Comic-Con.

Originally titled The Longest Weekend from Criminal #2 and #3 is the story of Hal Crane, a veteran cartoonist who uses his appearance at a convention — where he's due to receive a lifetime achievement award — to settle some scores about missing artwork from decades earlier.

And this new hardcover edition will be in the same format as their recent My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies graphic novel Here's how it was originally solicited
CRIMINAL #2 (MR)
(W) Ed Brubaker (A/CA) Sean Phillips
"THE LONGEST WEEKEND": Archie Lewis was the artist's artist in his heyday, although that's not what he's famous for. He's famous for being a nightmare to work with-and dangerous. So when an old assistant is forced to chaperone his one-time mentor to receive his lifetime achievement award, well… let's just say things don't go well.
CRIMINAL #3 (MR)
(W) Ed Brubaker (A/CA) Sean Phillips
"THE LONGEST WEEKEND," Part Two-Jacob's weekend taking care of his old mentor takes a turn for the worse.
And a look ahead to San Diego…
