[SXSW 2019] ‘Ramy’: Hulu Comedy Series Finds Ramy Youssef Just Trying to Be Good (TRAILER)

In an excellent example of Karmic timing, Hulu has released the first official trailer and key art for comedian Ramy Youssef‘s new comedy Ramy. If the 10-episode, half-hour series sounds familiar then it should: Bleeding Cool’s Andy Wilson had a chance to check out the show’s SXSW panel this past weekend, and will have an interview with Youssef before Ramy premieres on the streaming service on Friday, April 19th.

Here’s your first look at Hulu’s Ramy, starring series writer/co-creator Youssef, Mohammed Amer, Hiam Abbass, Amr Waked, May Calamawy, Dave Merheje, Laith Nakli, and Steve Way:

Ramy s01: Ramy Hassan is a first generation Egyptian-American who is on a spiritual journey in his politically-divided New Jersey neighborhood. RAMY will bring a new perspective to the screen as it explores the challenges of what it’s like being caught between a Muslim community that thinks life is a moral test and a millennial generation that thinks life has no consequences.

Youssef executive produces alongside showrunner Bridget Bedard, Jerrod Carmichael, A24’s Ravi Nandan, and series co-creators Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch.

Here’s what Youssef had to say to Vanity Fair when explaining that Ramy is meant to offer a real portrayal of a modern Muslim family in America – warts and all:

“They’re messy, they’re ignorant, they’re loving, they’re a little racist, they’re . . . you know—they’re everything everyone in America is. Meeting at our fault lines is much more interesting to me than meeting at shared values. I’m not trying to sell you something. If anything, I’m trying to show you where we are. There is nothing to hide.”
