New York Toy Fair: Star Wars Has Some Interesting Reveals

Hasbro's Star Wars team was at a bit of a disadvantage today at their New York Toy Fair presentation. With Episode 9 and The Mandalorian coming later this year but still under wraps, there was no reveals from those releases available. What they DID show however were some cool repackages and re-releases of things that desperately needed it, and somethings that maybe they shouldn't have done, depending on who you ask. One thing is for sure, this was the year of the 3.75 inch collector at Toy Fair. For once.

The big story is the announcement of the Retro Kenner figures. Exclusive to Target, they are exact replicas of old school Kenner Star Wars figures, right down to their accessories. Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth vader, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and a Stormtrooper will all be available. I am not sure how I feel about this as a vintage collector myself. With so much repro already out there, I guarantee you that these weapons are passed off as the real thing as soon as they hit the shelf. That bugs me. They look great, and the cardbacks are going to fun fun on the pegs. But I am not sure if I like these.

What I DO like, and they should do more of, is continuing that line by doing figures never done. They are doing just that with a Tarkin figure packed into a re-release of the Escape From the Death Star game. This has been a wish for collectors for so many years, that this is happening is a huge treat.

Other figures shown off were heavy on Return of the Jedi, with Jabba's Palace playset and a new Skiff shown off. Some of the various character you would want populating that Skiff will also be coming exclusive to Walmart this spring. Jabba's Palace will come with Han, Han in Carbonite, and Ree Yees.

We got to see final prototypes of a bunch of new Black Series figures as well. Doctor Aphra, BeeTee, and Triple Zero were shown, along with a trash compactor Luke, Ezra, Chopper, and more. Also revealed was the Celebration exclusive for this year. Phantom Menace Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul will come exclusively on Episode 1 style cardbacks in the six inch scale. Both figures will also be released in the regular line later this year.

Finally, details were shared on the Hyperactive line. Darth Vader is the first figure, and these have metal exoskeletons so they can hide their joints, allowing for a more realistic look. They will also be in a new scale: 8 inches. Coming in premium packaging and with multiple interchangeable hands and such, he looks incredible. Find more info and preorder on Hasbro Pulse here.
