'Supernatural' Review – "Damaged Goods" Ripe with Winchester Intrigue [SPOILERS]

The CW's Supernatural is definitely setting us up for an overload of feels in the 300th episode, with each week delivering classic Winchester dilemmas and heartwarming family moments. In "Damaged Goods," we see Dean (Jensen Ackles) face another seemingly impossible situation that requires sacrifice – once again.

This whole episode had me on edge. Billie (Lisa Berry) gave Dean the only way out of this Michael debacle. We don't know what it is, but we're pretty sure it is going to suck. Dean is clearly on a mission and he's checking off a short and simple bucket list. Hugging Sam (Jared Padalecki) before heading out to see their mom (Samantha Smith) is a major tell.

Winchester Surprise

Mary and Bobby (Jim Beaver) have been staying at Donna's (Briana Buckmaster) cabin in Wisconsin. He's out of town, so Dean will have the quality mother-son time he desperately misses. He has a quick visit with Donna on his way. They bond over burgers and she's worried about him. Of course, Dean doesn't want to talk about it. Donna respects that but feels suspicious when he gives her a tighter-than-usual goodbye hug.

When Dean arrives at Mary's and says he's starving. He's craving Winchester Surprise and asks her to make it with extra cheese. They're both terrible cooks, but this meal is her specialty. It brings back many fond memories of the good ole days. Plus, it gets her out of the way so he can quickly work on his mystery project. We're not sure what he's building, but we know this won't end well.

He may think he's being sly, but Mary and Sam know he's up to something. I love their phone calls keeping tabs on Dean. The end-of-the-world hug made Sam weary. They know Dean is up to something. She tells him not to rush over, but Sammy's already on his way. Hell yeah, he is!

Sigh…This is why we love the Winchesters.

Nick's Fury

Unfortunately, Nick (Mark Pellegrino) crashes Dean's bonding time with mom. He's been brutally following leads and finally discovered which demon killed his family. Mary was the last one to encounter the demon, so Nick chases her down for answers. Donna gets the heads-up on a stranger's search and tries stopping him. Despite a valiant effort, he gets the upper hand and heads for the cabin.

He abducts Mary and grills her for details on the demon. Instead of killing the demon, she trapped him in a small warded box. It has been a while since we've seen one of their spooky and booby-trapped storage units. Reminded me of the good ole days with Bobby.

Nick doesn't fall for any of the traps and gets the face-to-face he wished for. Sam, Dean, and Donna show up to help Mary just in the nick of time. The demon shares unsatisfying insight before Nick plunges an angel sword into his eye. Lucifer ordered him to kill Nick's family. He needed a vessel. That's it. We figured as much, but Nick had to hear it for himself. Will he think it was all worth it when he's sitting in prison?

After hearing Dean's "I told you so" speech, Sam realizes he put his faith in the wrong guy. He tells Nick off. Sam expected better from him and feels terrible for all the innocent lives lost because of his compassionate and misguided decision. Sappy Sam is done. Nick can rot for all he cares.

The Only Way

When all the Nick drama is done with, the Winchesters head back to the cabin and we finally get some answers. Dean's plan is to lock himself in a special kind of warded box and rest at the bottom of the ocean for all eternity.

Ummm…WHAT?!?

We're all on Sam's side when he confronts Dean about this insane solution. Who cares if Billie has a book dictating that this is the only way to solve the Michael problem? Winchesters don't cower to Fate. They're on friggin Team Free Will! Has Dean forgotten the last 13 seasons? Geesh.

Furthermore, Dean went on this farewell tour and was going to leave without saying bye to his brother. Seriously, dude? Look at sweet Sammy's sad and broken-hearted face. He'd be unbearably devastated learning about this after the fact. Then again, Dean makes a fair point: Sam is the only person who can talk him out of doing this.

With the mushy and tear-inducing Winchester Saga score playing in the background, Sam swears he'll find another way and Dean insists on making this sacrifice for the greater good. *tear*

For the SPN Family, this is just another Thursday. No matter what the mythos is, defeating The Big Bad always comes down to a Winchester sacrifice. The next few episodes will probably feel like Season 3 déjà vu – Dean is destined to suffer and wants to make the most of the little time he has left. Sam won't rest until he finds a way to save him.  Let's see what kind of twist the writers put on the sacrifice story this time.

We keep coming back for more because we love these guys. We're sucked into the Winchester's drama no matter how repetitive it feels. They always find a way to make it feel new. This was another solid episode. I've enjoyed this season more since they've come back from the mid-season break.
