DC Comics is making the launch of Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell’s new series for the Wonder Comics imprint returnable to retailers. Which means no matter how many copies retailers order, they will be allowed to return unsold copies to DC Comics for full credit.
There has been concern that a new series featuring an unknown black female teenager may be underordered by conservative (with a small ‘c’) retailers not wanting to get stuck with comics books they can’t sell. There have been previous occasions, such as with the launch of Motor Crush, that a black female protagonist was the reason given by retailers to publishers why they may not have ordered a book.
In this case, DC Comics are able to ally that fear by making the comic book completely returnable, even in the comic book market built on direct non-returnable distribution.
It may also be worth noting that Bendis did tease Naomi’s presence in a recent issue of Action Comics #1005…
Here’s the solicitation.
