Amethyst as the Most Mature Gem? Steven Universe's Deedee Magno Hall and Michaela Dietz at SDCC

Sean Aitchison writes for Bleeding Cool from San Diego Comic-Con:

Steven Universe had a big presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con — the Cartoon Network booth was dedicated to the series, it had two panels, and an upcoming movie was announced. Before all the hubbub broke out at the panel, I sat down with the voices of Pearl and Amethyst, Deedee Magno Hall and Michaela Dietz, to ask them a few questions about the series' latest drama-bomb. Spoilers ahead!

Amethyst as the Most Mature Gem? Steven Universe's Deedee Magno Hall and Michaela Dietz at SDCC

BC: Do you think the reason that Amethyst is the "most mature Gem", at least in regards to the Pink Diamond/Rose situation, is because she has no attachment to the Diamonds?

Michaela Dietz: I don't know why Steven said that (laughs). From her perspective, she's like, "Ah, why are you saying that?" but perhaps you're right. She didn't have history to cloud that judgement there; her number one priority in that moment was make sure that it's about Steven, listening to him, making sure that he's heard. So, I think if "most mature" means being a good friend and listening, then yeah, I think that's about right.

BC: So, Pearl was the one keeping the big secret. Did you find it hard to keep the secret yourself knowing that the episode wouldn't come out for a while?

Deedee Magno Hall: Not at all, not at all. This is what you call "mommy brain" (taps temple), so if I was told about all of the secrets at one point, I forgot it after (laughs).

BC: And in regards to the secret itself, do either of you think that Pearl still sees Rose as a hero despite what she did? If so, why would that be?

Deedee: (Whispers) Oh my god, that's so deep. Me personally, I love Susan Egan, who voices Rose/Pink Diamond. I love her so much that I just will always envision Susan as Rose, and she'll always have a special place in my heart.

Michaela: This is really tough. I would say, we just don't know the full story. I feel like there are only more nuggets to be revealed and I think based on those, then I could make a better guess. So maybe we should all just keep tuning in and watching the show!

Deedee: Yeah!

Michaela: That was a cop-out answer (laughs).

Deedee: No, it's good, it's good (laughs).

I'd like to extend a thank you to Michaela and Deedee for sitting down with me and talking about their extraordinary voice work on the series. You can catch Steven Universe on Cartoon Network and the Cartoon Network App.
