Vemom: Tom Hardy Talks the Duality of the Role, Plus 2 New Images

Sony Pictures is expected to bring out the big guns for Comic-Con International, and one of those movies it's expected to show off Friday night is Venom. The first teaser for this superhero movie wasn't exactly beloved, but the second, which finally showed off the title character, was much more well received. Entertainment Weekly is currently doing their Comic-Con preview and spoke to star Tom Hardy and director Ruben Fleischer.

"As far as Marvel characters, I have to say for me, Venom looks the coolest," Hardy says with a laugh. "That sounds a bit shallow! But I appreciate that he has a kind of brazen swagger and a zero foxtrot attitude."

Venom isn't exactly a hero, and Hardy described the character as a "tragedy clown", which might be one of the best metaphors for Venom, as a character, ever.

"There's a tragic clown element, which I find funny and is harmonious with some of the work that I like to do," Hardy says. "There's something funny about the circumstances of having a gift but it's a tragic gift. It's a superpower you don't really want, but at the same time, you love it. It makes you feel special. He's a reluctant hero and an anti-hero."

Fleischer went on to compare the character to a werewolf and talked about how Venom is different from other aliens on Earth stories that we get in fiction.

"We talked a lot about a werewolf and what it is when you get infected or bit by a werewolf. … Usually a human gets imbued with powers or an alien comes from outer space and has to figure out how to live on our Earth," Fleischer says. "But this is really about a relationship between two people who have to work together to create this hybrid symbiotic relationship."

This is one character with two very different voices and, for Hardy, figuring out each of those voices really helped him get a handle on the character.

"It's a bit like Ren and Stimpy, you know?" Hardy says, laughing. "They have different sounds. I always saw Venom as sounding like a James Brown lounge lizard, and Eddie Brock is kind of…" — he switches to an aw-shucks American accent — "I don't know, an everyday kind of guy. But he's inherited this massive ego, this beast."

Venom is not the normal superhero, and Hardy mentions heads being bitten off, which is always a fun visual to get.

"There's that biting-off-heads issue," Hardy admits, "which is not what you would expect from, say, Captain America taking down a crook."

We should expect a new trailer for this movie to drop during the Sony Pictures presentation next Friday and considering the release date it'll probably make its way online.

Summary: When Eddie Brock acquires the powers of a symbiote, he will have to release his alter-ego "Venom" to save his life.

Venom, directed by Ruben Fleischer, will star Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, and Michelle Williams. It will be released on October 5th.
