Finding the Cheat Codes to Weight Loss – Today, I Am No Longer Obese

Back in April, I posted a personal story about a diet I was undertaking — something that I was inspired to do after reading the life history of cartoonist, satirist, actor, and performer Willie Rushton.

At that point, I had lost 18 pounds but was still very much obese. And I have had a few enquiries since then as to how it's going.

Well, as of this morning, I am no longer obese, merely overweight. I have lost a total of 40 pounds. And I have done this without increasing my exercise regime and remaining working in a relatively sedentary state.

I still have another 38 pounds to go before I am no longer overweight and will probably want to keep going to give me a buffer zone for when I inevitably put weight back on. So I've given myself until the end of the year.

Finding the Cheat Codes to Weight Loss – Today, I Am No Longer Obese

I have been using the ketosis method. The only diet I have ever been able to stick to — and even then there was the incident with the packet of jelly babies in May. But it is working, for me at least. Limiting carbs as much as possible, no pasta, flour, rice, bread, booze, reduced fruit, no peanuts or cashews, and upping my fat intake, butter, cheese, meats, macadamia and pecans, eggs, and lots of green veg cooked in butter and olive oil. Replacing the calories I would have taken in from carbs with those from fats, forcing my body to get its energy from fat and burning through my fat supplies. No counting calories but eating until I am full. And then finding myself fasting by accident because I am no longer hungry. My joints are better lubricated. I have stopped feeling drowsy through the day. I sleep better — though have to watch for added leg cramps. Solved by a few stretches before bed, and a little salt on my eggs.

It is a pig not to have bread. But then, I can have a pig.

And it's working. I began with a BMI of over 35. It is now under 30. I got up to 253 pounds, am now 213. I am heading for 178 pounds with a BMI of 25 and then we will see.

Again, the reason I am posting this on Bleeding Cool is that a) people here have asked and b) the comics industry is full of people whose lives are sedentary. This has worked for me without an exercise regime — which is basically cycling a few miles on a Wednesday to pick up comics and running around the house after kids. I basically just sit here, work, and watch the weight drip off. It feels like I have found the cheat code to weight loss. Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, bacon, avocado, start eating cheese.

It's not easy, but it's doable. And if you are, like me, the kind of person worried about their weight but too weak-willed to do anything about it, this may be the answer.
