According to a new report by GamesBeat, the new Battlefield game will be Battlefield V and will take place during WWII. Which makes it a pretty good sequel choice to Battlefield 1, which took place during the First World War.
As GamesBeat reports:
It was previously known as Battlefield 2 internally at EA. Battlefield V will return the series to World War II in a main entry for the first time since 2009’s Battlefield 1943, GamesBeat has learned from sources familiar with EA’s plans. These sources wish to remain anonymous.
So, Battlefield V will return to the previous Battlefield counting system, taking up after Battlefield 4, but it will be more like Battlefield 1 than 4 if we had to hazard a guess.
Further background on the project includes:
This is an entirely new Battlefield game and not a remaster of the 2005 Battlefield 2. EA will reveal it soon, and it will launch it before the end of this calendar year.
EA and Battlefield developer DICE decided on this strategy several years ago. They knew they wanted to get away from the modern and near-future settings for a while, but it also didn’t want to burn the WWII setting right away. This led the studio to start with WWI knowing that it could always still go to WWII with the next game if Battlefield 1 didn’t work out.
With Battlefield 1 being such a success, moving on to WWII for the game’s follow-up makes sense. After all, you can’t go through all of WWI without then leading directly into WWII. Those two tend to go hand-in-hand. However, this brings us back to the fact that no media can ever really get past WWII. Let’s just hope Battlefield V handles the subject with a bit more grace than Call of Duty: WWII.
After all, EA has quite a bit to prove with Battlefield V after the critical flops that were Star Wars: Battlefront II and Mass Effect: Andromeda respectively.
