The Death of Mothers in Today's Action Comics #998 and Detective Comics #975 (SPOILERS)

One of the more mocked moments of the Batman Vs. Superman movie was the moment where Batman and Superman realise their mothers both have the same first name, Martha, stop fighting and team up instead.

But their mothers still affect their lives. And no more than this week in their respective comic books Detective Comics #975 and Action Comics #998.

We have previously seen how Dr Manhattan's messing around has seen Superman and Batman weakened, lost their focus by their relationship with their fathers. Manhattan taking Superman's biological father Jor-El out of the timeline from the moment of his death and turning him into Mr Oz, and dreaming about the death of Jonathan Kent – and how Manhattan may have affected that as well. And Batman confronted by a Thomas Wayne whose son died in Crime Alley and became Batman while Martha became The Joker.

Action Comics sees Superman travelling in time just to check what happened, happened.

The Death of Mothers in Today's Action Comics #998 and Detective Comics #975 (SPOILERS)

And it did, and he gets to see his biological mother, Lara Lor-Van die in the flames of Krypton all over again. And his focus distracted by this events leads him to take his eye off the ball of Lois Lane…

The Death of Mothers in Today's Action Comics #998 and Detective Comics #975 (SPOILERS)

While in Detective Comics, featuring a trial of Batwoman over her killing of Clayface, Batgirl sees the death of Martha Wayne as being instrumental to how Batman is seeing the whole situation, as well as reformatting the current plot of Detective Comics as something used to control Kathy Kane and how this was all inevitable.

Batwoman used to be Batman's aunt, then her cousin on his mother's side. Not often mentioned though…

But lots of sad Batman and sad Superman faces for the meme-meisters.
