Aaron Mahnke‘s mission to prove that real life can be just as strange (and horrific) as the things we can imagine is getting some second-season help from Amazon. The streaming service is giving a renewal order for Lore, the nonfiction horror-themed docu-drama anthology series based on Mahnke’s podcast that explores the origins of modern myths and legends. Sean Crouch (Fox’ The Exorcist, CBS’ Numbers) will be taking over as showrunner from The X-Files vet Glen Morgan (Millennium).
“With Sean Crouch at the helm, Lore is set to be scarier than ever. In Season 2, we will explore global, real-life horror stories that make this series unlike anything else on television. We are thrilled to be back on Prime Video.”
– Ben Silverman and Howard Owens (statement)
Created in 2015 by Mahnke, Lore is an award-winning, podcast that uses a “campfire/scary stories” structure to examine the dark side of human nature. What makes Mahnke’s podcast truly unique is that he relies solely on non-fiction, historical events that have been exhaustively researched for accuracy. Lore is usually released on Mondays and airs on a bi-weekly basis. Over the past few years, Lore has earned a number of awards, including iTunes Best of 2015 Award; and Best History Podcast by the Academy of Podcasters in July 2016. Both The Atlantic and Entertainment Weekly listed the show as a top podcast in 2016.
“Customers loved the first season of ‘Lore’ for its unique blend of narrative and documentary storytelling, and we’re excited to give them another season of this suspenseful hybrid series. Sean brings great experience in the supernatural genre, and we’re excited for him to help us tell even more frightening and visually captivating stories.”
– Heather Schuster, Head of Unscripted, Amazon
