A New Super Mario World Speed Record Trounces The Game In Under 60 Seconds

There have been plenty of speedrunners for Super Mario World on the SNES that do it in amazing fashion. We especially love the one where the guy does it blindfolded with style points for finding a new way to kill Bowser that people don't think about. But the latest record that has officially been recorded is about to put a lot of people to shame and will set the bar for a while. On Tuesday, SethBling set the new world record for speedrunning the game at 54 seconds and 56 milliseconds, using a method called "arbitrary code execution" where he uses red shells to trigger certain key events in the game's memory and forces it straight to the end credits.

You can watch the entire sequence above in his video, as well as read the Google Doc he created on how to pull it off. But now comes the debate as to whether this is technically "beating" the game, or if this is simply just a speed record of getting to the end credits. Depending on where you stand, those are two very different things and there are people on both sides who argue for and against this "beating" the game. No matter where you stand though, that is pretty cool to check out.
