Bleeding Cool Bestseller List 28th January 2018 – "Doomsday Clock Sold More Copies Than Our Second Through Seventh Place Sellers Combined"

With Doomsday Clock, the unauthorised sequel to Watchmen by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank published by DC Comics topping every single retailer chart – and as you can see by the comments below – and the headline above – by a serious margin. Thanos as a recent entry into the chart as well, with Donny Cates and Geoff Senior. In fact there's a lot of interesting things going on just under the top ten too… let's stretch it out a little this week.

  1. Doomsday Clock #3
  2. Detective Comics #973
  3. Action Comics #996
  4. Flash #39
  5. Avengers #677

Solid sales week. Doomsday Clock is selling like an unstoppable selling machine. Easily taking the top spot. XO Manowar is still doing well for us by breaking into the top ten. Lots of sell outs this time. Raven 1 did really good. Might have done better even if we hadn't sold out of it. Thanos sold out, wish we would have had more copies on hand to get it into the top ten but, we still have the previous issue on hand. Same story with Marvel Two In One issue 2. At least with that issue we were able to reorder it. Action Comics is doing very well. The hype for issue 1000 is helping it. X Men Blue Annual 1 beat X Men Blue issue 20 by one copy and they both made our top ten and might have made it higher but, we sold out. Very good sales for January.

My favorite kind of week– a very diverse array of product with 4 publishers represented on the chart! DC again cleans up, shocking nobody. Marvel Two in One was as good as comics starring the Thing and Human Torch can get, so it's nice to see people responding favorably. And not only did we sell out of Thanos #15, we sold through all the other Donny Cates issues. 2nd printings can't come quickly enough!

Our number 1 book of the week, Doomsday Clock #3, sold twice the amount of books our number 2 did. People are clearly still jumping onto Doomsday Clock because we also sold a lot of 1's and 2's this week. Marvel did well this week with 5 books making the top 10. Phoenix Resurrection #4 was our second best book of the week but Thanos is the real star. That book is gaining readers big time. Overall it was a good week, we have a lot of customers getting excited about what Marvel and DC are doing. Excitement and anticipation are building, I hope the publishers don't let the fans down.

DC dominates with Doomsday Clock again as it sold over double the amount of copies as the next highest selling book at FFF this week, The Flash. Nightwing: New World Order ended its mini-series at #9, selling better consistently than his regular title. To their credit, Marvel has been selling better with some titles, placing FIVE books in our Top Ten! Thanos is still the top-selling Marvel book, but Two-in-One and Avengers seem to both defy expectations and are selling fairly well. Phoenix Resurrection, Marvel's other "weekly" book is also still selling well at #8 despite the one time delay.

Redneck and Sink were the only indie books to crack into the Top Twenty at #17 and #18 respectively. It's a little shocking to see both a Donny Cates book not in the Top Ten in the week it came out, and to see a non-Image indie book sell decently. The latter is a nice surprise, the former is a little troubling. Weirdly enough the Marvel Avengers Infinity War Prequel comic sold enough copies to just barely make the Top Twenty (at #20). I can't think of any other movie tie-in that has ever sold more than a couple of copies. I guess people are getting excited for this whole super-hero movie thing.

I probably don't even need to say it, but Doomsday Clock #3 was our bestseller this week, by a decent margin. But even though DC was kind of a lock for the top spot, it was a good week for Image, with 4 Image titles–Monstress, Southern Bastards, Sex Criminals, and Black Science–making up the rest of our our top 5 bestsellers this week. One thing worth mentioning: Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivela's Abbott #1 from Boom! didn't make our official top 10 this week, but it wasn't too far off. We had an event with Saladin Ahmed last week, where we got permission to sell Abbott #1 early, and if not for that, it would've easily made the top 10 this week.

As more or less expected, the top spot this week goes to DOOMSDAY CLOCK #3. DETECTIVE COMICS #973 camps out at the second place slot, a reminder that our general sales are still ruled by The Dark Knight. We've actually got slightly more Marvel on the list than DC overall thanks largely to surprise hit MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE, now on it's second issue.

Average sales week. Very few surprises on the list. Amazing Spider-Man is back to near the top at #2. Not sure if people are jumping back on in preparation for #800 or seeing where Slott ends things. In any event, it beat both Detective and Action as well as Avengers, #s 3, 5, and 4 respectively. Only one title stands out this week and its Marvel 2 in 1 being our #6 seller. People want a Fantastic Four book. I know I do. Oh, and a sequel to some 80's book was number one. By a lot.

Another strong week, with Doomsday Clock outpacing everything else. In fact, between the two covers, Doomsday Clock sold more copies than our second through seventh place sellers COMBINED! Marvel 2-in-One #1 performed very well, though, almost equalling the first issue in Wednesday sales. The only other Marvel book that cracked our store's Top Ten was Avengers #677.

Notable sales of the week:

  • Amazing Spider-Man #1 CGC 1.5 $3,200
  • Hulk #181 CGC 9.6 $7,250
  • Teen Titans #12 $35 with spine damage
  • Tales of Suspense #40 CGC 0.5 $100 – This book was in terrible condition, but it's so rare it still sold in two days.
  • Spawn B&W #1 CGC 9.4 $350
