DC Comics and Hanna-Barbera to Oppose Warp Graphics' Trademark of FutureQuest

Back in October, Bleeding Cool told you that Warp Graphics was applying for a trademark of the word FutureQuest. At just about the time DC Comics were preparing a new FutureQuest series from the Hanna-Barbera line.

ElfQuest is a long-running fantasy comic book series created by Richard and Wendy Pini stretching back decades. It is a fantasy story about a community of elves and other fictional species who struggle to survive and coexist on a primitive Earth-like planet with two moons. Several published volumes of prose fiction also share the same setting. All issues of Elfquest published prior to 2013 are available online for free.

That includes FutureQuest, a continuing ElfQuest science-fiction storyline from the nineties, looking far ahead in continuity, created by Richard Pini, Delfin Barral and Barry Blair – and you can catch up on it here for free.

Hanna-Barbera has a comic book licensed and published by DC Comics, a crossover comic book series that features characters from various animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera, such as Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, The Herculoids, Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles and Moby Dick and Mighty Mightor.

DC Comics and Hanna-Barbera to Oppose Warp Graphics' Trademark of FutureQuest

Currently running as Future Quest Presents.

DC Comics once published ElfQuest Comics in a major deal with Warp Graphics, in 2003 gaining all media, merchandising and publication rights in all territories. But after a few years, that went away, Warp Graphics began publishing digitally and in recent years, Dark Horse has been publishing ElfQuest comic in print.

And now both DC Comics lawyers headed up by Megan L. Martin and Hanna-Barbera lawyers have headed up by Avis Frazier-Thomas have filed motions for extensions to oppose the trademark registration by Warp Graphics, which has been upheld until the 3rd of February.

We'll probably pop by again around that time to see how it's going down…
