Bleeding Cool Game Awards 2017: Game of the Year

And now, the moment you've all been relentlessly checking your feeds for, it is time to announce Bleeding Cool's Game of the Year 2017.

The nominees are:

  • Cuphead
  • Destiny 2
  • Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Horizon Zero Dawn

The judges scores were:

Games Madeline's Score Patrick's Score Gavin's Score Total
Cuphead 2 4 5 11
Destiny 2 5 1 6 12
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 1 5 1 7
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds 6 3 4 13
Super Mario Odyssey 4 6 3 13
Horizon: Zero Dawn 3 2 2 7

We had a tie on this one, for very obvious reasons. All of us loved Horizon: Zero Dawn, and despite being one of the first games of the year, it stuck with us all throughout the games season. Breath of the Wild may have single-handedly sold the Switch as a console gamers needed to have, it may have even saved 3D Zelda games as a whole. But despite all of that, there's just something about Horizon that feels like a modern game while Zelda is a bit of a throwback.

The jokes about Breath of the Wild being Legend of Zelda: Skyrim aren't far off the mark for a variety of reasons. Breath of the Wild is an open world action RPG where you delve through certain dungeons to collect new skills. And you get to ride around on a horse, a motorcycle, and there may also be an evil spooky flying villain. So, really, the Skyrim comparisons were inevitable. And despite the fact that we've all happily purchased Skyrim at least twice, we just had to give the trophy to Horizon. Because it was new, it was fresh, and it kicked some serious ass.

It also helps that Patrick hated Zelda, which means Horizon got great marks across the board compared to Zelda's hit-or-miss voting from our panel of judges.
