The Blacklist Season 5: Will the Finale be a Cliffhanger or Ending?

The Blacklist is five seasons in, Liz Keen (Megan Boone) now knows Raymond Reddington's (James Spader) secret and the number of criminals on the list has gotten much smaller. Does that mean the series, which is about to hit its 100th episode, will be coming to an end soon? The show still pulls in 8.3 million total viewers and a 1.6 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. Though last year's spinoff failed (Blacklist: Redemption), the series remains a good performer for NBC.

Series creator Jon Bokenkamp talked with EW.com about the future of the series, telling them:

We have a great cliffhanger, and a big ending for the season in mind that I think is going to be really compelling. It's not what we imagine the end of the series to be.

He goes on to talk about planning out the season finale without knowing if there will be a sixth season.

It's interesting to not know, and how you write toward that. We've decided that we love the characters enough that if, for whatever reason, we didn't have an opportunity to come back, we just have to find another way to do it, but we're not going to rush to some ending out of fear that we're not coming back. We have a story that we're telling that we really like, and it's going to take the time it takes to tell it.

Fellow executive producer John Eisendrath added:

We're confident that we have the best cliffhanger at the end of this season that we've had in the series.

Which only works as a cliffhanger if the series comes back.

The Blacklist returns Wednesday, January 3rd at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
