Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Eyeing a $60 Million Christmas Debut

The Christmas weekend is one of the weirdest release times of the year. If you live in a city like Los Angeles or New York it's the time to run over to the local independent theater and see all of the award season buzz before it gets a wide release later in January. For everyone else it can be a mixed bag of weird genre movies and family movies for those that don't celebrate the holidays.

This holiday season the movie that is looking like it's going to be Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle according to The Hollywood Reporter. The site is reporting that Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is looking to make $60 million over the three-day weekend.

Jumanji, launching on Wednesday Dec. 20, is among a flurry of year-end holiday titles that came on tracking Thursday morning. (Amazon Prime members will have a chance to see the movie early in 1,000 theaters across the country on Dec. 8 in a first-ever promotion.)

Pitch Perfect 3 is also tracking to do well its opening weekend with some reports saying it could bring in around $30 million.

The movie that isn't tracking well at all is Ridley Scott's All The Money In The World.

If tracking is correct, one movie that could find coal in its stocking is Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World, which no longer stars disgraced actor Kevin Spacey. One service shows the Sony/TriStar film taking in $6 million for the four days (it unfurls on Dec. 22). At the same time, Sony has three weeks left to promote All the Money in the World, so the forecast could change.

Scott has decided to pull Kevin Spacey at the last minute and Sony has had to scrap its entire marketing plan for the film.

Summary: Four teenagers discover an old video game console and are literally drawn into the game's jungle setting becoming the adult avatars they choose.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, directed by Jake Kasdan, stars Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Missi Pyle. It will be released on December 20th.
