Comic Creators React To Uber Losing Its London Licence
Much of London Comics Scene may be on a train to Leeds right now for Thought Bubble, but the news has hit. Uber has lost its licence to operate in London, over a number of regulatory failures.
It has been rejected on the basis that the company is not a "fit and proper" private car hire operator, specifically noting failures in relation to reporting serious criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates and driver background checks. The current licence expires on 30 September but Uber has 21 days to appeal and can continue to operate until that process expires.
The decision by Transport for London has been supported by London mayor Sadiq Khan and the black cab drivers union, who have been constantly opposed to Uber's working in the capital. The announcement has been opposed by Uber drivers' representatives and a number of politicians.
