Rian Johnson Might Be The Frontrunner To Take Over Star Wars: Episode IX

The Star Wars franchise lost its second (or third, technically) director this year. Star Wars: Episode IX lost Colin Trevorrow yesterday, and now everyone is wondering who is going to take over the movie. While we would love to see a woman or a person of color get the chance to direct a Star Wars film, there is a decent chance we already know who is going to end up directing it: Rian Johnson.

According to Deadline, nothing is set in stone yet, but no one would be surprised if Johnson ended up taking over Episode IX. In fact, that might have been the plan all along:

"If Johnson, who directed the December 15-launching Star Wars: The Last Jedi, does in fact come back to take the reins of the next movie, it somehow would seem like destiny. When Deadline revealed that the Looper helmer was being hired to take on Star Wars, the original intention was for him to direct two movies. Stay tuned. It might come to pass."

If you look back at the media run for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there has been virtually no negative press toward the movie. The most negative thing that has been said about the movie, so far, is that Mark Hamill had a hard time wrapping his head around the direction that Johnson ended up taking with Luke. There is quite a bit of hype for The Last Jedi, and Johnson has been doing a great job of winning over fans. He even showed up at the overnight line for Star Wars Celebration and didn't leave until everyone who wanted a picture or autograph got one.

Production for Episode IX is set to begin in early 2018, and this being the franchise's second director shake-up in as many months, we can expect a replacement sooner rather than later.

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.

Star Wars: Episode IX has a release date of May 24th, 2019.
