After being buried under the weight of Relativity Media’ bankruptcy proceedings and a number of creative incarnations, The Crow Reborn has risen like a phoenix from the ashes and found a new home at Sony Pictures.
While this iteration will take some nods from the original 1994 movie that starred Brandon Lee and directed by Alex Proyas, The Crow Reborn will reboot the franchise and stay faithful to O’Barr’s graphic novel. Original producer Edward R. Pressman will now produce with Samuel Hadida’s Davis Films and Kevin Misher‘s Misher Films. Sony will handle in global distribution while Highland Film Group will broker international rights.
Two questions that this announcement doesn’t answer is whether or not director Corin Hardy (The Hallow) will still remain with the project; and if Jason Mamoa (Justice League, Aquaman) would still be interested in the role as more and more movie offers have come his way since initially expressing interest. Pressman’s plan is to keep the pair together, with Sony Pictures hoping that Hardy’s Instagram post from August is a harbinger of good things still to come:
Here’s an overview of the original The Crow series from O’Barr:
“Murdered along with his fiance on Halloween eve by a vicious street gang, Eric Draven returns from the dead and led by a crow, seeks vengeance on the killers who wronged him, in a new edition of the classic graphic novel.”
