Why Wonder Woman Had To Fight Ares

When it comes to superheroes they often have such a large rogue's gallery that you're left wondering why the writers or director decided to go with that particular villain. When Wonder Woman ended with her fighting Ares, the God of War, no one was really surprised. Wonder Woman's rogues gallery isn't as infamous as Batman's, Superman's, or even the Flash's villains, and according to director Patty Jenkins over at Cinema Blend Ares was the most logical choice.

In my opinion, it would've been a mistake to make a first Wonder Woman film without her absolute arch rival nemesis Ares, who is the most classic villain from the lore and is her counterpart of her point of view. She's a god and he's a god, and he knows something she doesn't know and made a choice based on that. He saw the weakness in his father's creation and is trying to show the world how bad mankind is and therefore annihilate them and get rid of them. She, in the course of her journey, learns the same thing and ends up saying 'oh my god they are all of those things,' but she makes the opposite choice. If her story is about a shift in point of view, his storyline is a participant with that story, instead of being a villain bad guy, which is the point of the movie.

Wonder Woman -- Ares

It's story writing 101 to pit the hero against their opposite in every sense of the word. There is a sequel in the works so there's still time for other Wonder Woman villains to make an appearance in another movie.

Summary: Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, David Thewlis, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen. It's available on VOD today and on Blu-ray on September 19th.
