X-Men: Dark Phoenix Will Be "Grounded" And "Human", Because Of Course It Will

There was a brief moment in time when it looked like the X-Men movies were going to do something interesting. There are three movies set to come out next year, and they are sound so different from one another. That's a good thing — variety of tone is a good thing — and fans were even more excited when they heard that some of the more fantastical elements of the Dark Phoenix story might be finally making their way into the X-Men movies.

The X-Men of the comics meet aliens and have all sorts of crazy space adventures. The X-Men of the movies have been rehashing the same "X-Men save humans that don't like them" plot for pretty much every movie they've done so far. They cast Jessica Chastain as Lilandra, so there was finally hope that this series could evolve a bit.

It turns out that isn't the case. Despite the fact that Deadpool made enough money for Fox to take a few chances with their only superhero franchise a new interview with director Simon Kinberg in the new issue of Total Film does not sound promising:

"Simon Kinberg says he must 'find a way to ground it so it's not too intergalactic,' stressing the X-Men movies are 'human…and emotional.'"

You can do crazy space adventures and still have plenty of emotion and humanity in it. Look at Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, countless of movies with crazy space adventures that still have humanity in them. Why is this franchise so afraid of leaning into their source material? That's what they did with Deadpool and it worked, why is this any different?

Summary: Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn it into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix, directed by Simon Kinberg, stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult. It will be released on November 2nd, 2018.
