Neil deGrasse Tyson On Star Wars Science And His Favorite Time Travel Movie

I should star by saying I have mad respect for Neil deGrasse Tyson, not only for his knowledge but for his ability to be a spokesman for science in an era where people question the validity of science. He is definitely on my list of people I'd like to buy a beer. He was the guest on Talking with Chris Hardwick…. who must have a lot more time now that @Midnight is gone. In the two clips below from the conversation, Chris Hardwick brings up two very important questions.

Neil deGrasse Tyson

First he talks about the science in movies and how Tyson deals with fans asking him about it. The astrophysicist used to tweet out comments about where movies got the science wrong or where they got it right in a movie that didn't seem to care about getting everything else wrong. But people got angry at him for it, so he stopped. He brought up one observation and started by saying "none of the science in Star Wars is real, just stop."… and here I thought he wanted to stop getting people angry… He then mentions the new Death Star in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and how it would drain the energy from a star completely so it could destroy more than one planet. Tyson points out that if it completely drained a star it would have enough energy to destroy thousands of planets, making it a much scarier weapon than the film did.

The second clip covers the second question where Hardwick asks Tyson's favorite Time Travel movie. His answer is Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Tyson points out that the film is very innocent about the science, not really trying to explain it at all. He also liked that the historical figures that they brought back spoke the actual language they would've spoke, like Beethoven spoke German, etc. The movie could've done a universal translator type thing, but they didn't.
