Rick And Morty Season 3, Episode 5 Review: A Deep Dive Into Jerry (Gross)

Rick and Morty season 3, episode 5, is the first episode of the season that is good but not great.

Creators: Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland
Summary: An animated series that follows the exploits of a super-scientist and his not-so-bright grandson.

Rick And Morty Season 3, Episode 5

The third season of Rick and Morty appears to be on a mission and that mission is reminding its viewers that Rick is a terrible person. There is a certain subset of the fandom that has come to idolize Rick and every episode this season has been one reminder after another that while Rick can be someone you can root for he isn't someone you should idolize. This episode is here to remind us that Rick ruined Beth and Jerry's marriage, to an extent he was at least a contributing factor, and that he doesn't care about that. It's an episode that puts Rick and Jerry in the same room, alone, for the first time and it doesn't go well. It's just a shame the episode isn't a little better.

It's by no means bad, but the creative team of Rick and Morty came out swinging hard with their first episode and then hit it out of the park with the third. The Pickle Rick episode is about as close as this show has come to perfection and while the Vindicators were fun last week this is first episode that's just "very good". It's funny and there is one seriously dark joke that will leave your jaw on the ground, but it ultimately feels like filler in a way that this show often doesn't. There are some decent moments back on Earth with Morty, Beth, and Summer as well that feel like they should pack more of an emotional punch but instead feel almost empty.

Rick and Morty is a show that could not possibly keep with the pace it was setting and had to hit a small road bump eventually. While this bump is hardly huge this is the least memorable episode of the new season thus far.
