Rick and Morty Season 3, Episode 3, Pickle Rick, is a hilarious take on family therapy and complete insanity that stands up as one of the funniest episodes.
Creators: Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland
Summary: An animated series that follows the exploits of a super scientist and his not-so-bright grandson.
The best episodes of Rick and Morty are the episodes that take complete insanity and meld them with genuine insight into the characters — when the show decides to go super dark or when it decides to unexpectedly punch you in the gut. These moments stand out. ‘Pickle Rick’ isn’t quite on that level with the genuine insight part, but the insanity of the other part of the episode makes up for it.
We find out, very early on in the episode, that Rick has turned himself into a pickle for a very specific reason. The episode splits off from there as Pickle Rick tries to get home as Morty, Summer, and Beth go to a group therapy session. The episode bounces between the two very different stories and it absolutely works to keep the episode sprinting to the finish line.
The Pickle Rick stuff is pretty much perfect. You would think that Rick turning himself into a pickle would be off the rails enough, but the episode somehow manages to top that in sheer insanity. The scene where Rick is moving around as a pickle are hilarious, disturbing, and everything we expect from Rick and Morty.
On the other side, as someone who has gone to family therapy, the entire scene with Morty and his family was so spot on it was scary at times. We get some genuine insight into Beth’s perception of her dad while delivering some of the best one-liners she’s probably ever had. The entire thing ends with one of the best after-credits scenes of this series to date. It will be hard to top that one.
This episode of Rick and Morty Season 3 was always going to make an impact, because as soon as Rick yelled “I’m Pickle Rick!” it became the Season 3 rallying cry. We knew this episode was going to be good, but we didn’t expect it to be this good. A ton of fun from start to finish, and if this season keeps up this pace we’re in for a treat.
