Looks like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be engaging in a bit of a “student exchange program” in 2018, as seven lead actors from the play’s West End production are set to reprise their roles on Broadway when previews begin at the newly-renovated Lyric Theatre next March for a April 22, 2018 premiere. Jamie Parker (Harry Potter), Noma Dumezweni (Hermione Granger) and Paul Thornley (Ron Weasley) will be taking the stage for the U.S. production; with Poppy Miller (Ginny Potter), Sam Clemmett (Albus Potter), Alex Price (Draco Malfoy) and Anthony Boyle (Scorpius Malfoy) joining them for the run.
Based on an original story from J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a production set-up as one play presented in two parts; with both parts intended to be seen in order either on the same day (matinée and evening performances) or on consecutive evenings. Cursed Child features movement by Steven Hoggett; set design by Christine Jones; costume designs by Katrina Lindsay; music/arrangements by Imogen Heap; lighting by Neil Austin; sound by Gareth Fry; illusions/magic by Jamie Harrison; and music supervision/arrangements by Martin Lowe.
Cursed Child is the eighth book in the Harry Potter series and the first official story presented on-stage for a live performance:
“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”
With a play as large in production and scope as Cursed Child is, the rest of the cast will include a number of new actors in a variety of roles, including: David Abeles, Brian Abraham, Shirine Babb, Jess Barbagallo, Stephen Bradbury, Lauren Nicole Cipoletti, Joshua De Jesus, Jessie Fisher, Richard Gallagher, Susan Heyward, Geraldine Hughes, Edward James Hyland, Byron Jennings, Katie Kreisler, Joey LaBrasca, Andrew Long, Kathryn Meisle, Angela Reed, Dave Register, Adeola Role, James Romney, Malika Samuel, Alanna Saunders, David St. Louis, Stuart Ward, Madeline Weinstein, Alex Weisman and Benjamin Wheelwright.
Cursed Child director John Tiffany is excited about the Broadway production’s cast, “We have assembled an extraordinary cast for Broadway. Our Cursed Child family is growing with 28 brilliant new actors bringing their unique talents to our production.”
