Derek Kolstad To Return For 'John Wick: Chapter 3'
The John Wick movies kind of came out of no where. The first one seemed to appear out of thin air and when it finally hit theaters it was critically and commercially well received. It wasn't that surprising that they greenlit a sequel. A movie that no one had ever heard of suddenly had a sequel that everyone was looking forward to. The question of whether or not they would be able to pull it off a second time was raised.
John Wick: Chapter 2 was just as good as the first one and when the curtain closed on the sequel it became very apparent that we were getting a third. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed today that writer Derek Kolstad, who wrote the first two movies, will be back for the third. They are also reporting that the movie is being fast tracked to start production by the fall.
Director Chad Stahelski, who co-directed the first movie and solo directed the second, is also coming back for the third movie. These are movies that could break if they were put in the wrong hands so the idea that all three of the movies are going to be developed by (more or less) the same creative team is great. It means that there is going to be a consistent style and tone throughout the entire trilogy.
Star Keanu Reeves is also returning for the third movie. There isn't any word about the rest of the cast and whether anyone else is going to make a comeback.
The John Wick movies have made over $250 million at the box office off of modest budgets. They are shinning examples of how to make high quality movies on small budgets. As long as they keep that up for the third movie there is no reason it couldn't be a hit too.
