Tabloid journalism is usually something we only think about in terms of terrible magazines sitting in the checkout lane in the grocery store. We laugh at the National Enquirer talking about how the Queen of England collapsed for something like the twelfth time this year but there is more to it than that. We also see this with social media and how many times we see the death hoaxes. The fact that when we see the news that someone like Paul Walker has died in a car crash the first thing we think is not “wow, that’s horrible” it’s “that sounds fake”. If someone is a public figure then someone is going to make up a story that you’re dying at some point.
Val Kilmer is no stranger to these rumors ever since a hospitalization in 2015. In October of 2016 Michael Douglas added fuel to the fire by saying that Kilmer was battling throat cancer.
“Val was a wonderful guy who is dealing with exactly what I had (throat cancer), and things don’t look too good for him,” Michael Douglas said in a CBS article. “My prayers are with him. That’s why you haven’t heard too much from Val lately.”
Kilmer denied the claims at the time but during a recent AMA Kilmer revealed that he was having health problems but is in the process of healing.
“He was probably trying to help me cause press probably asked where I was these days,” Kilmer reasoned in the AMA, “and I did have a healing of cancer, but my tongue is still swollen altho (sic) healing all the time. Because I don’t sound my normal self yet people think I may still be under the weather.”
Kilmer doesn’t give any further details about his illness (because it’s frankly no one’s business but his family’s) but he has been announced as a guest at the upcoming Salt Lake Comic Con in September so he must be feeling better. In any case we all wish Kilmer our best as he heals.
