Being an esteemed executive producer that has taken a short film to said festival, I thought it best that this news come from me. Here’s the Cannes announcement:

Under the presidency of the Spanish director, screenwriter and producer Pedro Almodóvar, the Jury for the 70th Festival de Cannes will be made up of eight key figures from the 7th Art, coming from all over the world. Four women and four men will thus help Pedro Almodóvar select from among the films in Competition. The winners will be announced on Sunday 28th May at the Closing Ceremony, following which the Palme d’or will be awarded in the presence of the winning team.

So here is that jury in full:

Pedro Almodóvar – President
(Director, Writer, Producer – Spain)
Maren Ade
(Director, Screenwriter, Producer – Germany)
Jessica Chastain
(Actress, Producer – United States)
Fan Bingbing
(Actress, Producer – China)
Agnès Jaoui
(Actress, Screenwriter, Director, Singer – France)
Park Chan-wook
(Director, Screenwriter, Producer – South Korea)
Will Smith
(Actor, Producer, Musician – United States)
Paolo Sorrentino
(Director, Screenwriter – Italy)
Gabriel Yared
(Composer – France)

So that was all just as we expected it to … WAIT … WILL SMITH?!

This is the most awesome jury ever. Fact. More awesome than the one that let OJ off (although that was bad awesome).

Just in case some of these names seem slightly off the beaten track for some of you, here’s a little on the names that I didn’t initially recognise.

  • Maren Ade directed last years hugely successful Toni Erdmann.
  • Agnès Jaoui was seen recently in Bruno PodalydèsComme un avion, Baya Kasmi‘s Je suis à vous tout de suite, and the imminent (in France) Aurore from Blandine Lenoir.
  • You might not be aware of the name, but Gabriel Yared is responsible for a metric tonne of good film. It’s easiest for you to just browse the IMDB page, but for those who can’t click here’s a list of three English language films he composed for; The English Patient, Cold Mountain, and The Lives of Others.

This is a news post, though, I’ll leave the reaction to Kaitlyn and / or Bill, later. Because I’m a neutral reporter of facts here.

About Eliot Cole

When I say that you should buy something, please understand I say that in full knowledge that the prices of comics are just flat out wrong. I'm talking to the select few with enough disposable income to actually pay $3.99 for ~20 pages, often less.

Anyway, me? I'm a generally affable chap, happy to shoot it over a pint of proper beer (that's ale to some), I read basically anything, but I've found I'm now finally learning to love the small press / self-published scene a little more, even though I'm a relative newcomer to it (10y).
