Lucifer Is On The Move… Because Of The Tax Man

lucifer

Lucifer is on the move. The first two seasons of the Fox series has been filmed up in Vancouver. Now, Deadline is reporting that for the already approved third season, the production will be moving to Los Angeles. Which is interesting as the series is set in L.A. but has been using the Canadian counterpart for over thirty episodes. Now this may seem kind of strange. Just this season the Warner Bros Studios moved the production of Supergirl from Los Angeles to Vancouver to cut cost as the series was moved to the CW. It's not often shows move the other direction.

The why is likely tied to tax breaks. The report says that Lucifer was submitted in a California's Film Commission batch of shows applying for a tax credit. It's believed that relocating shows get a priority. This could explain why Lucifer got an early renewal (Feb 13th) as the window to apply was Feb 10th-17th. Fox also renewed Lethal Weapon, which already films in Los Angeles and is a WBTV property, but isn't currently getting a tax credit, so that was applied for as well.

Lucifer, based on the comic series by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg, is a surprise hit and keeping pace in the ratings with its more expensive lead-in, Gotham. Both averaging 1.1 in the 18 to 49 demo and bumping up to 1.9 in the +7. Lucifer stars stars Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Rachael Harris, DB Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Kevin Alejandro, Aimee Garcia, Tricia Helfer and Scarlett Estevez.

Fans of the series can take all of this as good news. Things looked kind of iffy for the series when it gained a sudden second hiatus earlier this year, but word of the move to Los Angeles and the early renewal shows that Fox has faith in this show being around a while.
