The Prison Is Crowded, The Drama Continues: Thoughts On The First Six Episodes Of Orange Is the New Black

Netflix has confirmed that Orange is the New Black has been renewed for three more seasons, and I can’t say I’m shocked. The show has gotten so much attention over the past few years, and still manages to be a well-written, emotional drama to watch. I’ve officially made it halfway through the new season, and I couldn’t contain my thoughts for much longer. So much is happening and attention must be paid.

[WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK SEASON 4 BELOW!!!]

So the prison is crowded. A ridiculous amount of new inmates have arrived and things look much like a sardine can. But how are our favorite characters doing? It depends on who you’re talking about.

Without Piper, this show wouldn’t be what it is today. However, I can’t stand what’s happening with her character. She has become cocky with no real power behind her. She’s obnoxious, and I just don’t find her character interesting anymore. Alex on the other hand, who I’m glad to see still alive, is still amusing to me. Her story has drama and emotion that keeps me hanging on.

There are characters that I’m really happy to see doing well. Even though Lorna is super weird, she’s found someone just as weird to be with her forever. Though his current residency at his parents should probably be resolved before she gets out of prison.

Then there’s a new couple blossoming with Poussey and Brook. I’m sure there are tons of fans shipping the couple on the internet. I find their scenes to be a nice relief from the drama that is going on otherwise.

What really keeps me motivated to watch the show is the character development taking placed with the rougher characters. Nicky is an excellent example. With the way things ended up last season, I wasn’t sure if we’d see much of her again. I’m happy to report that she’s back and she’s in MAX with someone else I have been dying to find out about.

Yeah, I’m talking about Sophia Burset. That’s been the roughest part of watching this season. The unfair treatment for something that to me, doesn’t justify her residency in MAX, makes me sad. Like I said, I’m halfway through the season now, and regarding this character…things don’t look good. In fact, Nicky was sent to clean up a bloody cell that we know Sophia was staying in. Does that mean she’s dead? I’ll have to keep watching to find out.

Stay tuned for my review of the rest of Orange is the New Black Season 4. All episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
