SDCC '15: Hasbro Shows First Looks at Force Awakens Figures… Sort Of

By Jeremy Konrad

IMG_0887Friday is always Star Wars day here at SDCC and with it came the anticipation that we would be seeing a heaping of Force Awakens material presented. Hasbro being one of the most anticipated panels. Sadly, not much was shown from that, but what they did reveal was pretty spectacular.

Starting off by introducing Ashley Eckstein (fresh off her wildly successful Her Universe fashion show last night) to help show off the new Ashoka Tano 6-inch scale Black Series figure. Done in a realistic style, this figure can only be described as badass. This was followed by a neat surprise as we got a reveal of Kanan (#TeamKanan) Jarrus as well, and personally for about 5 minutes that became my most wanted figure.

They spent a couple pointless minutes highlighting new lightsabers before getting back to what we all wanted: figure reveals. Luckily, we were spared any mentions of Furbacca. Then came a reveal of Jango Fett and my new most wanted figure, Luke Skywalker from A New Hope. While they have done…5 previous versions of Luke already, this is the one everyone wants, and he comes with his binoculars and soft goods cloak.

Maybe the most controversial aspect of the panel came towards the end with the reveal of the Fan's Choice poll winner announcement. For a few weeks, many Star Wars collectors sites hosted polls to see which character from the entire history of Star Wars would be the next 6 inch figure. After all the votes were tallied, the top 7 characters went up on the Star Wars website and the final polling was done there. Confusion ran rampant when that list was posted, because on most lists on the collectors sites had a few different characters coming up much higher in the polls who were left out.  In the end, the poll wasn't even close, as EU character Darth Revan ran away with the vote, with Sabine Wren from Rebels coming in a "close" second. Then they announced that they were doing Sabine anyway as a runner up. Then the panel said all of the final choices would be good roadmaps and figures to do in the future. But…all of them were major characters that we want to see (Ben Kenobi) and they should have already known that. So what was the point of the whole thing then?

Then they teased saying that was all they had to show, and then going into the Force Awakens reveals, including what some of the box art may look like, and a HUGE 26 inch TIE Fighter with pilot (169.99!) that looks stunning. Pretty sure this is the first time we have seen the full body of that pilot as well, because in the trailer obviously he is flying.

I wanted more, but was very happy with what was shown, as Rebels deserves as much attention as it can get. Many, many pictures down below:
