Fourth Most Famous Superhero In Britain Is…

family-fortunes-101108-350Family Fortunes is a British family gameshow based on the US show, Family Feud, in which competing families have to test whether their own opinions on a matter match those of the population at large. Basically, in a twist against all other gameshows, they compete to be the most average.

All Star Family Favourites is exactly the same thing, but with the family or someone vaguely famous. Tonight's show on ITV1, watched by Brendon Connelly for his sins, threw up a bizarre statistic.

First up were the family of Zoe Lucker, an actress from schlocky drama series Footballer's Wives. They were asked to name a famous superhero, the aim was to find the four characters who took up all 100 answers from members of the public. First, the Luckers went for Superman. Good call, they got 57 of the 100 answers in one. Then they went for Spider-Man. Again, good one, 19 answers. And Batman, their third answer took up 16.

So there are four left. Four answers. They tried Iron Man with an… AHH AHHH… negative response. Hulk? AHH AHHH. Wonder Woman? AHH AHHH.

The question passed to the family of Danny Jones from boyband McFly, who suggested Robin.

AHH AHHH.

So, presenter Vernon Kay asked, what was the final answer, taking those final votes?

This bloke.

Super-Ted-Cover

Superted was a star of a series of books, adapted into a Welsh cartoon series that was translated into English. It was about a teddy bear-turned-superhero, an alien called Spottyman (voiced by Jon Pertwee) and… well, not much else. It first aired in 1982 in the UK then in the US in 1984 on the Disney Channel. The series was revived again in 1989. The series was released on DVD last year, but is hardly aired in the UK these days. I'd be surprised if it was broadcast any time this century.

So how the hell this fluffpuppet would come to mind to the British public more than Wonder Woman, Iron Man or, hell, Bananaman, is not known. Twitter, naturally, has gone mental.

For those who want a blast from the past, here are the opening titles…
