Every so often (but seemingly less so since we started this column), comic book publishers accidentally send out unlettered previews, showing us what the characters are doing but not what they’re saying. What a boner! In Improbable Previews, we correct this mistake by putting the words back in, using our best guess at what they are […]

Move over, Infinity Countdown Metal Justice Wars for Wolverine! Sunday’s edition of Berkeley Breathed’s Bloom County featured what might be the best comics super-mega-crossover event of the year. We have a guest swipe-filer, Nicolas Gurewitch, creator of the Perry Bible Fellowship. Who notices something very peculiar… pretty sure Baskin Robbins robbed their title design from Bill Watterson pic.twitter.com/loQbXcjUYp — Nicholas Gurewitch (@PerryFellow) September 10, 2015 The similarities of “calvin” and “baskin” and the repeat of “obb” just make it more convincing… To close […]
By Josh Hechinger Welcome once more to From Strip to Script, where I take a shot at reverse-engineering a script from a finished page of someone else’s comic. Did y’all catch that #fourcomics wave on Twitter? Jim Zub asked the Internet to name four comics that influenced them growing up, and the whole thing kinda […]
The Bill Watterson – The Quest for Calvin and Hobbes exhibition has opened in Angoulême, at the start of the largest comics art festival in the world. Pearls Before Swine newspaper strip creator Stephan Pastis writes, Let me tell you. Just getting an email from Bill Watterson is one of the most mind-blowing, surreal experiences I have ever had. Bill Watterson really exists? And he sends email? And he’s communicating with me? But he was. And he had a great sense of humor […]

My hunch is that many folk reading this have a pretty meaningful personal relationship with Bill Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes strips. I certainly do.
If we think of this as a film - which it isn't, quite - we could say it's a single-shot looped animation in a very wide aspect ratio, split-screened to emulate the look of the original strip.
Adam Brown has adapted one of Bill Waterson's Calvin and Hobbes strips into a short animation. And it is definitely an adaptation, changing some details to work with both the limitations and possibilities of animation.

Coming from the “film side” of Bleeding Cool, what I’m supposed to know about Bill Watterson is that he comes from Chagrin Falls, as does Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich; I’m also supposed to tell you about Secondhand Lions, Tim McCanlies’ beautiful Watterson tribute. That’s all true, and I’m happy to oblige, but let […]
