Launched in 2018 as a 3-issue mini-series by writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo, Batman: Damned immediately became one of the most important Batman comic books of the 21st century, largely because it featured the first (and last) appearance of the Batpenis when Bruce Wayne appeared fully nude in several panels in the first issue. Batman’s nudity sparked an internet sensation which resulted in hundreds of clickbait articles, also sending the book rocketing up the sales charts and, eventually, causing Warner Bros to rethink its entire publishing strategy.
The plot of Batman: Damned sees an alternate-universe Batman team up with John Constantine to investigate the death of The Joker. We may never see another comic like Batman: Damned outside of Tijuana Bibles, but its impact on the comic book industry earns it a place alongside seminal works like Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, and X-Men Forever as amongst the greatest comic books ever published.
In an interview with ComicsBlog, comic book writer Brian Azzarello talked about his recent comics career, his attitude, and his work at DC Comics and Image. The interview, translated into French, also sees Brian Azzarello talk about the controversy that dogged Batman: Damned a year ago. For those with short memories, the comic was the […]
Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo have been one of the more perfect creative pairings. With perennial sellers for DC Comics such the Luthor and Joker collections, the Rorschach chapter of Before Watchmen getting a new boost from the TV show, and the recent release of the collected Batman Damned topping the charts, they should be […]
Starting with comic books solicited for January 2020, DC Comics introduces the term Prestige Plus. It’s a new name for DC Comics’ periodical format with square binding and card stock covers that measure approximately 8.5″ by 10.875″. Periodicals that fit the Prestige Plus format would include the first such volume, Batman Damned, as well as […]
Batman’s dad Thomas Wayne is a bad guy now. He didn’t used to be. He was the kind doctor and philanthopist who taught his son to be charitable and benevolent. Suddenly, he’s a villain in nearly every new story. What’s going on? Thomas Wayne was the benevolent, beloved father of Bruce Wayne. He was a […]
Comic book creator Lee Bermejo talked on panel yesterday at New York Comic Con about his work and his process, at the New York Comic Con. Artist on books such as Joker, Before Watchmen: Rorschach, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, the recent Batman Damned, and writer/artist on Suiciders and Batman: Noel, his work gained infamy when a […]

In 1989, Christopher Priest – then known as Jim Owsley – wrote a story for Batman Annual #13 called Faces, with art by Michael Bair and Gray Morrow. Which featured this scene, Bruce Wayne rising from bed in the nip, and heading out to change into his Batman clobber. A functional, non ezplicit nude scene. […]
The final issue of Batman Damned #3 by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo was originally solicited for March, on a bi-monthly schedule. But that was before Batman’s penis appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and newly appointed publisher Pamela Lifford had to tip the entirety of DC Comics’ schedule in the bin and […]

Brian Azzarello is one of the top-selling writers in comics. Even before the fuss, Batman: Damned with Lee Bermejo was a prestige format comic selling over 100,000 copies, and because DC wouldn’t reprint the first issue, it rocketed in price. And then Batman: Damned #2 sold even more than #1, something almost unheard of. But Batman: Damned […]
Things aren’t going great for The Punisher. First of all, he’s in a prison in Bagalia, and second of all, there are no good barbers there. Also, the other residents really don’t respect people’s privacy. Confronted in a steamy locker room by a prison boss nun, Frank Castle lets it all hang out. You might […]
I’ve been hearing more about how the reaction to the publication of Batman: Damned#1 is affecting other books, creators and employees at DC Comics. But over the weekend at MCM London Comic Con I heard a tale from comic book writer Chris Claremont that put in it perspective. He recalled the publication of Superman #75, which […]
The first appearance of Batman’s penis in Batman Damned #1 set the comic book world on fire, sending shockwaves throughout DC Comics, causing the comic to skyrocket in value (especially after it was announced there would be no second printing and any future collections would censor the Batawang), and leaving a Batpenis-shaped mark on comic […]
Earlier today, we eagerly listened as Chelsea Cain unleashed holy hell on Marvel and the superhero-industrial complex, but now that the floodgates have opened, Cain continues to speak out about the important issues facing our industry. Like Batman’s penis. Bleeding Cool has written near a dozen articles on the Batpenis since it was revealed in […]
Since Batman: Damned #1 hit stores on Wednesday, all anyone has been able to talk about is the long-awaited reveal of Batman’s penis in a mature readers comic. Even when not talking about the batpenis itself, people have questioned DC’s decision to censor it digitally and in future print versions. What is DC trying to […]
So no hope of a solo series then?
Greetings from the coal face of the direct comics market. Where retailers try to increase their orders of certain comics ahead of sale. Where supply and demand and most accurately reflected, where you can see which books are hot, where new orders are coming in and how retailers are reacting to new, unanticipated desire! And […]
Lee Bermejo has been working on Batman: Damned, a Batman/Hellblazer project written by Brian Azzarello and now part of their Black Label mature readers superhero imprint. And to launch the title for September 20th… Bermejo says that “a preview should be showing up in most DC books”. I am going to hazard a guess that this […]
