A Nervous Main Character: Thoughts On The Night Of's Advance Viewing

Last Sunday, just before Game of Thrones began on my HBO Go app, a preview played announcing that their newest show The Night Of, could be viewed a few weeks prior to the actual premiere of the show.

Bleeding Cool reported that a few weeks back and described the show for readers:

"The program delves into the intricacies of a complex New York City murder case with cultural and political overtones and examines the police investigation, the legal proceedings, the criminal justice system and Rikers Island, where the accused await trial. Created by Schindler's List's Steven Zaillian and The Wire's Richard Price, the series stars John Turturro and Nightcrawler's Riz Ahmed."

At the time, my main focus was on watching the finale of Game of Thrones, but yesterday, when I felt the empty void begin to form without good TV to watch, I decided to give it a try. The premise seemed interesting enough, so I pressed play.

[WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE NIGHT OF BELOW!]

It all started out innocently enough. I felt immersed in the world of the nervous main character, but soon his nervous energy began to impact my experience. Now, I know you might be thinking, well of course you're nervous. The content of the show centers around a murder. However, that's not the case. This main character is nervous from the beginning, even when he's sitting at the dinner table talking to his parents about a party he wants to go to later that night.

When he meets the girl that you know is going to be the one that's killed, the tone of the show doesn't change. It's steady all the way through. I honestly expected it to be a heart-racing experience, instead it was unnerving. After watching the first episode, it's difficult not to feel like you can predict what's going to happen for the rest of the season. The evidence is clearly stacked up against him, and there doesn't seem to be a way for him to escape it. Don't get me wrong, it's artfully shot, and the acting is good. I really like John Turturro's character. However, who knows if that will be enough to make it entertaining.

Now I'm left frustrated to wait until July 17th for a second episode. I guess only time will tell if the show will be successful or not. You can watch the first episode of The Night Of on HBO Go now.
