'Nick Hears The Voice Of The Tenth Doctor Doll In His Head' – Ten Years Of New Doctor Who At NYCC

Matt Smith's Still In The Tardis And They're Already Releasing Peter Capaldi-Centric Promos For Doctor Who

By Amanda Gurall

400 Doctor Who fans piled into a panel room today at NYCC to discuss the last ten years of "new Who" with a panel of fans and experts.

Moderated by Andre Tessier (Tardis Tavern, LI Who) in a fantastic Tardis kilt we heard from Nick Abadzis (Titan Comics), Ken Deep (Doctor Who: an Occasional Podcast), Barnaby Edwards (actor, Dalek operator), Deborah Stanish (Verity! Podcast, author) Graeme Burk (author), Caroline Symcox (author) and Simon Fraser (Titan Comics).

The panel was essentially a sentimental look back at the last ten years that started with the moment each panelist found out the show was being rebooted. Abadzis said he first heard about it as a wild rumor he didn't believe, Stanish said she was too busy mourning the end of Buffy but caught up after it aired. Graeme Burk remembered the exact date and time and took the next day off from work to take it all in!

They discussed whether or not Christopher Eccleston is the forgotten new Doctor ( NO ), whether the ninth through twelfth Doctors should be featured in Big Finish audio dramas (YES) and would the age of social media continue to spoil future episodes? The last question was really great because across the board the panelists recalled that during this season's leaks the fans were very considerate and generally avoided spoiling the show for other fans.  It really speaks highly of the fandom and was a nice moment.

Abadzis said he bounces ideas off a tiny Ten doll on his desk as he Creates comics for Titan. To which the moderator joked, " Nick Abadzis hears the voice of the tenth doctor doll in his head! That will be the next headline on Bleeding Cool!"

It's interesting the way Doctor Who old and new is internalized by so many people in a really personal way and each incarnation brings something new to the table. We had a good time reminiscing and dreaming up some new ideas for the next ten years with the panel. Allons-y!
