Alan Moore's Unearthing Videos Have Been Unearthed – And Will Go On Sale On Sunday

In 2007, Iain Sinclair published London: A City of Disappearances, which included the Alan Moore novella, Unearthing, a story about the long history of London suburb Shooter's Hill in a fashion similar to Voice Of The Fire on Northampton, and also his best friend and mentor who lived there, the late Steve Moore, which would also include a history of British comic fandom, which Steve all but started and maintained himself.

In 2010, Alan Moore spoke for two and a half hours, reading from his Unearthing novella, accompanied with visuals from Mitch Jenkins and live music by Crook&Flail, in the Old Vic Tunnels in London.

This was released in an illustrated book form and CD as Unearthing.

The event had also been filmed by Damien Sung but those recordings were believed to be lost.

Now they have been found. The visuals have been remastered into a three act film, mixing the tapes with new recordings, text from the books and other materials to create Unearthing, an on-line film on Vimeo that will go on sale for $20 on Sunday.

I've been watching it since the wee hours of last night. Like Chris Morris' Blue Jam, it benefits from that slightly blurred state of reality where the world is sleeping and dreaming up what it plans to be next. As Moore says in the first act, "Shooters Hill is dreaming London, dreaming London up." Well at 2am last night, Kingston Vale wanted in on that and seemed to have rounded up a posse of Coombe Hill, Roehampton Vale and Beverley Brook for a London suburban showdown.

Sorry. I got a little carried away there, the film has a tendency to do that. It is both a tribute to a man';s life, who affected much and many, as well as a history of the place he called home. If Iain Sinclair's book was about disappearing aspects of London, then Unearthing is about keeping them present in the human mind. Where the gods are very real.

The film will be available to stream and download for $20 from 9amPT/11am ET/4pm BST on Sunday, 8th May. The films will also come with a Making Of featurette and a more literal examination of the life of Steve Moore. And a teaser will be screening at the Barbican in London on Sunday as well…
