Tonight's Super Bowl, In Geek, WIth Stan Lee, Tom Hiddleston And Scott Snyder

When it comes to the Super Bowl, I feel like Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan.

Confused. I may need to watch this again.

But I do enjoy how this jockiest of jock occasions has been seized, secured and monetized by the geeks, with the advertising pointing to every sci-fi and genre film and TV show coming. Indeed many people just watch it for those (cue Brendon Connelly on the right hand side of Bleeding Cool hunched over his US IP late tonight).

Stan Lee and Todd McFarlane are going to see the game together, as McFarlane releases American Football figures, with Stan supporting the Seahawks.

And Sporting News is happy cover geek references that spin out into the sport.

The catchy nickname for the Seattle Seahawks' dominant secondary is a play off DC and Hanna-Barbera's band of supervillians, but just how was it coined?

It goes back to a radio appearance that strong safety Kam Chancellor made during training camp last season. Chancellor, as a guest of "The Bob and Groz Show" on Seattle's ESPN 710 in August 2012, talked about how he and his fellow Seahawks' defensive backs liked to "bring the boom" on opponents.

The co-hosts, Bob Stelton and Dave Grosby, had their listeners run with it and polled them for their best nickname suggestions on Twitter. Legion of Boom won out and became official after cornerback Richard Sherman, well aware of the "Legion of Doom," gave his approval a day later.

And run comparisons between players and DC villains. This is all very, very odd.

Last year HeroComplex of the LA Times profiled ads aimed at geeks, and it's no differnt this year. We've had sixteen seconds of Winter Soldier, a little bit more of Amazing Spider-Man 2, Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul is brought in for his expert Super Bowl commentary, Tom Hiddleston, Ben Kingsley and Mark Strong and reprising their Thor, Iron Man 3 and Kick Ass bad guy roles for Jaguar…

Even if they can't get a Super Bowl ad, Scott Pilgrim's Anna Kendrick can give her all for this Newcastle Brown Ale non-ad ad.

And having teams from cannabis legalisation states has led to some predictable takes... or tokes.

And a considerable chunk of comics are bedding in ahead of the big game… or running away screaming.

So… what are you planning?
