After seeing his parents murdered in front of him as a child, billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne spent the next decade training in a quest to become the best fighter, tactician, and detective in the DC Universe, all so that he could enact his plan for revenge: dressing up in a bat costume and beating the heck out of mentally ill criminals at nighttime in Gotham City. Thusly, Batman was born, and the comic book world has never been the same.
Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and first appearing in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, Batman went on to become one of the most well-known superheroes in the entire world, alongside the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Squirrel Girl. Today, Batman can be found starring in movies, television shows, video games, and at minimum 30% of the comic books published by DC Comics each month. Batman's long-running series has long been the standard against which the sales of other titles are measured, as Diamond Comics Distributors uses Batman as the benchmark for its sales charts. Even President Donald Trump is a Batman fan, quoting supervillain Bane from the film Dark Knight Rises in his speeches, possibly due to the fact that Trump Tower was used as a stand-in for Wayne Enterprises in the film.
