    Default Christmas Chaos At Comixology

    Tom Huxley writes for Bleeding Cool;

Android users, be wary when upgrading Comixology or any of its associated apps.

An update to the app, released earlier this week, introduced the new "Continue" feature that gives users the option of resuming where they left off, regardless of which device they'd been reading it on before. A bookmark in the cloud, so to speak. It also brought HD comics to Android, until now a preserve of the iOS based app.

So far, so good. However some users reported problems with the update. One problem reported was that the comics they'd downloaded before the update had disappeared from their device. This was down to the app needing time to convert the existing collection to the new reader format - in most cases the comics turned up again eventually.

But there were other problems. Bugs preventing the app from opening at all on some devices. Unreasonably slow guided view transitions. Perfectly normal purchases failing and being left in "limbo", unavailable to buy again.

A company responsive to customer concerns, Comixology has swiftly acted to create a stopgap solution by releasing an update that reverts the app to its previous edition.

But even that comes with its own problems. Users are reporting that their collections have disappeared again. Except this time it appears they're not coming back. The conversions made by the previous edition have rendered the files unreadable and undetectable by Comixology. Meaning they're still on your device, but you can't read them, and even getting rid of the whole app won't help - you'd have to manually go into your files and delete a folder called "abf-library" if you want your space back. The comics will still be in your account though so all you need to do is download them again.

Comixology recommends that users who aren't experiencing "hiccups" with the "Continue" edition should not upgrade to the current version.

Users on Windows 8 shouldn't suffer from this concern - the app's only been released on that platform today...

    UPDATE: ComiXology have responded here.

Even as a pretty strong supported of digital, this is pretty shabby. It's not like the contents of everyone's longboxes are just going to become spontaneously unreadable one day. Very frustrating when the format stumbles like this. It's a letdown for consumers and it's more ammunition for the anti-digital luddites. Shame.

These problems happen, the real question is how does the company respond, and from the sounds of things they have responded quickly. What bums me out is that this update apparently brought CMX-HD to Android, and I've been waiting for that for a long time. Just hope my tablet can support it.

My files disappeared on my Transformer Prime. I purchased a few new ones, then they all reappeared but now have a "A New Update is Available to Download" for each title when I select it. I can still read the old file, though, and have only updated one of the titles.

My initial reaction was "Wait...what? What happened?" and then I figured it went to HD. But a comparison of my old files versus the new files on my tablet has really shown no difference in quality.

Personally, I don't care. If I have to redownload everything (close to a GB) then so be it. WiFi will make that easy, and I can do it while I sleep. It'll just be a minor speedbump. No big deal from my end.

Not uncommon for android updates, it will get worked out soon enough. I doubt the comics are erased from the account. Users can go to comixology.com to make sure everything is still on their account, just a software conflict on the device

No it's not shabby, these things happen on any platform and can happen even with respected developers. Android OS works with a ton of devices, sometimes the kinks aren't worked out until the full release

I asked about CMX-HD and was told no ETA yet. Just hoping it becomes available for 1920x1200 tablets.

My comixology app just updated to 3.0.7.7 today on my Google Nexus 7. All of my downloaded comics were cleared... Which is fine. I only keep copies of comics I haven't read yet to conserve space. My biggest problem is that the delete comic functionality has disappeared.. So there is no way to delete currently downloaded comics.

I've got 3.0.7.7 on my Acer A700 and while it cleared all my previous downloads (they went into the abf-library Rich mentioned) I can delete files.

It's Menu=>Settings=>Manage Storage=>Delete Individual Comics=>Long Press on book and you'll get the option to delete.

Just remember you have to actively select "Delete Individual Comics" for the list to come up before you can delete a book. I just deleted one from mine to check and it worked.
