Default Ape Entertainment Creates Mature Readers Imprint To Publish Poison Elves

We all know who Ape Entertainment are, right? Publishers of a bunch of licensed titles, like Pocket God and Kung Fu Panda, for kids. Easy, job done.

Or rather it would have been if they hadn't just decided to launch a mature readers imprint with Drew Hayes' Poision Elves.

Comics fans of the nineties should recognise this indie series, initially self published, then published by Sirius until 2004 with #79. Hayes' death in 2007 of a heart attack, aged 37, put pay to any return. Until now.

Ape have decided to continue the series after its final issue, #79, and have soured Hayes' notes for the completion of the series. The new comic will debut in March, with covers by Darick Robertson, Terry Moore, and art by Osvaldo Montpeller.

Wow. That wins the "Didn't See That Coming" award for this year. I loved this series back in the day, but I'm wary of seeing if it can maintain any of the spirit or quality it had with Hayes at the helm. Any word on creative team? I will pick up at least the first issue to try it...

I'm assuming you mean "scoured" not "soured". Was completely confused on first read.

Ape has a mature readers imprint and they're not calling it "Silverback"? Seems like a missed opportunity.

We had the good fortune of being the site that originally broke the Poison Elves news on Sunday! The series will be written by Robb Horan (founder or Sirius Entertainment, PE's previous publisher) with art by Osvaldo "Montos" Montpeller. The original story, a bunch of preview art, and an audio interview with Ape Entertainment CEO David Hedgecock can be found here!

I don't have the cash to add any more books to my pull list, but I just might make room for this one. I've heard great things.

YES! Ape plans to release "phonebook digest" style reprints of the original series, similar to what Tony Moore did with Strangers in Paradise.

This is awesome news! I collected the original series with #1 and am interested to see what they are doing with it. I was genuinely saddened when Hayes died. He was a great writer and artist and Poison Elves was an amazing series.
