Default New Image From Ender's Game - Meal Time In The Mess Hall

Lionsgate have released a new still from Ender's Game, revealing just what it is the recruits have for their meals: blocks of stuff, and maybe some bread. Yum.

Click through to look at the image full size, and try to work out what the "score board" in the background tells you. Or keep it small size and wonder what Hailee Steinfeld and Asa Butterfield are talking about. Do they have Pretty Little Liars in the 'future space army'?

There's probably more to be gleaned from this image but suddenly I find myself hungry and feel I better go get myself a nice plate of stuff before it gets too bad. Probably for the best - if I hang around too long I might point out how the evil aliens in Ender's Game are called buggers and, well... I don't want to make it seem like we're on an Orson Scott Card witch hunt or anything.

Wow. I never knew the evil aliens were called buggers. When does this come out again? I can't imagine the shit storm that will erupt in the mainstream media. BC has been a microcosm of the ensuing fury.
Can someone ask Grant Morrison to give me a haircut?

This movie iss an uphill battle* anyway - the novel is going to be difficult to translate adequately to the silver screen. (Hopefully we won't have naked shower fighting--sorry NAMBLA)

Wonder what the Buggers will look like. Are they going for an ant-type look or are they going to modify the design the way they modified the characters' ages?

    *no pun intended

Most folks on the west side of the pond don't know what "bugger" means, so don't worry about that.

(Though a well-read closet case like Card probably did when he wrote the book.)

It's scheduled for release November 1 in the US.
I look forward to the venue and context of the debate changing.

I have been a fan of Ender's Game for almost 20 years, and I just now made the bugger connection. In my defense, I didn't know Card was a homophobe until quite recently.

Their alien bugs. . . what should they be called?

    They were called Xodomites.
    But that was too subtle.

I don't think that that's correct; at least, among SF fans, there are enough Anglophiles to completely know what it is.

As for this thing, the best it can hope for is to be Starship Troopers Jr. I won't be seeing it, regardless.

The buggers/Formics are absent in most of the novel, so it's a far cry from Starship Troopers. It's a very character-centric book about an exceptional child, so it would be more in the style of Harry Potter or Hunger Games (even though EG came out long before either of those, lol).
