Default BBC Planning Toby Whithouse Spies, Lee Mack Comedy, Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell - And More

There's a lot to catch the eye on the BBC's list of their new commissions for 2013. Here are the shiniest, glintiest bits.
    • A new sitcom from Lee Mack, as well as a return for Not Going Out.
    • Three more new sitcoms: one by Ben Elton, one by David Walliams, and Father Figure by Jason Byrne.
    • A documentary on DNA hosted by Eddie Izzard, and one on the history of working class Britain with Paul O'Grady.
    • A serial adaptation of Susanna Clarke's brilliant fantasy novelJonathan Strange And Mr Norrell. Six hour long episodes, adapted by Peter Harness, who previously wrote the properly superb Is Anybody There?
    • David Nicholls' The 7.39, pitched as "a romantic drama for grown-ups" and with a narrative sparked by two commuters fighting for a seat on the early morning train.
    • And a 70s-set cold war spy thriller called The Game, created and written by Being Human's Toby Whithouse.
    Well played, Auntie.

That maybe doesn't sound like twelve months worth of new stuff, but these are just the newly announced highlights and there's more to be unveiled as we go along.

ZOMG! A high quality adaptation of Strange/Norell might be the greatest thing in the history of ever.

Agreed, been waiting years for this to happen. Kind of a shame that this may preclude it ever being brought to a feature-length film, but good to see it attempted by BBC.

VERY curious about the casting on Strange/Norrell. It'll work much better as a mini series than a film anyway.

    Sigh.

    I lost The Game.
