I've just read an interview with Greg Rucka and he made an interesting comment.

The dirty little secret is that those Image guys made all these deals and almost to a man failed to deliver. They burnt Hollywood horribly on letting comics talent actually be a part of the production of the material they sold.

From my layman's understanding projects can languish in development as Liefeld has about 6 properties IIRC that are set to be made. I didn't suspect that it could be the result of bad practices on the part of him and other Image founders.

Much of what we complain about from the big 2 in part stems from their attempting to create the following. A happy median between appeasing Gen x (And older) and establishing a connection to the present generation. All of this reminds me of something I read from Byrne in reference to fans complaints, basically he said " You should have stopped reading comics at 15 or 16 and these things wouldn't be an issue".

So, why did so many of us not stop reading comics at 15 or 16?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 400 is one of the greatest comics of all time but that stems from wanting to see Peter move on. Aunt May should've been able to make wheat cakes at will without my generation wanting to see that transition away from her.

OK, I admit that I never followed Valiant Comics in the past. I didn't think I had the time to follow even more titles back then. But now that I've started following the reboots of the Valiant Universe, I have to say that I'm impressed.

I like most of the new Valiant reboot titles, but the one I really enjoy is X-O Manowar. It's a combination of a barbarian story, an epic cosmic saga, and guy-in-an-armored-suit story...and all done fairly well. It's simple, but interesting and enjoyable stroytelling by Robert Venditti...and pretty decent artwork by Cary Nord. After reading the first couple trades, I've added it to my monthly pull list. The whole 'Planet Death' storyline is a great one.

Anyone else reading this title, or any of the other Valiant reboots?

Meredith McClaren writes for Bleeding Cool. And draws. This is a good thing. Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/05/1.jpg ...

Meredith McClaren writes for Bleeding Cool. And draws. This is a good thing.

But then, I usually don?t.

In fact, the most perfect summation of my professional career may just be that I have walked quietly with a big stick-

-poking at things to see what?ll happen.

And this has worked out pretty well for me.

A brief aside.

My name is Meredith McClaren.

I draw comics.

It?s what I?ve got in the grand scheme of things to offer and I?m pretty much rubbish at anything else that holds my interest.

I?m also not very talkative, least of all about myself. (The very thought of addressing anyone in the manner I write to you now gave me heart palpations for the better part of an already anxious weekend. Which is pretty funny, considering I do a twice-weekly journal comic about myself.)

I?ve always considered my artwork a paper tiger. It speaks loudly for me. And I can tell you honestly that I invest a lot more emotion into a single line than I ever had a printed word or tonal inflection. So I art to ?speak? and it keeps me sane.

Comics let me ?talk.? And if I do it right, I can earn a living with them.

But back to the business at hand.

Poking around and seeing what?ll happen.

I?m a nervous little thing. I take my risks, but not without worry.

But there is a point where a person can stop, step back, and accept that doing something of peculiarity can?t be so awful. (So long, of course, as there was no reasonable possibility that it could get you jailed or killed.)

And that line of thinking frees up a person to act upon whatever queries they may have.

-?I wonder if I can do a consistently updated, long form comic.? Spring forth my journal comic SCRAPS, now entering into its fifth year.

SCRAPS March 9 2013

-?I wonder if I can tour Oni Press?s offices.? I work for them now. I?m drawing Jen Van Meter?s HOPELESS SAVAGES and it?s all very kick ass.

-?I wonder if I can do a hundred plus page fantasy story in under a year.? I can?t, or at least, I haven?t yet. But it?s been a year and a half and my webcomic HINGES has just finished it?s first story arc.

HINGES: CLOCKWORK CITY Page 012

-I wonder if I could Kickstarter a printing of HINGES. That remains to be seen. It has a week to go and we?re not there yet. But we?ve come pretty damn far.

Now even though I?m in the business of rooting around to see what?ll come of it, that doesn?t necessarily mean I won?t worry about the variety of outcomes. When I started the Kickstarter, I thought that the worst thing that could happen was that it would remain unfunded.

That was the logical fear, at least.

The illogical anxiety was that not only might it not get funded, but also that its inception would invite condemnation from the folks in my field whose opinions I respected. Or worse, that they would be DISAPPOINTED in me. (And, that?s always so much more painful, isn?t it?)

Turns out people are pretty nice though. People wanted to help me succeed. Friends and strangers both.

This kickstarter has done a lot for me already, whether it funds or not. I?ve learned more about self-promotion in the last three weeks than my entire academic career. I?ve pushed hard to get it funded. And I have a lot of insight now as to why.

Yeah, sure, the first week was driven mainly by the ego boost that only the possibility of success could give me. And yes, the second week was totally devoted to the few people who thought I couldn?t do it, and my completely justifiable conviction to succeed out of spite. But around week three I started looking hard at the helping hands people were offering me. The ones who thought I could do it. The ones who sincerely wanted me to. Jen pitched in some rewards and Greg Rucka let me tie one into he?s own Kickstarter. (Running now. LADY SABRE AND THE PIRATES OF INEFFABLE AETHER. You should check it out.) Kelly Thompson also donated rewards, and soon Kris Anka will have a tier too. They were offering their time and money to me in hopes I would succeed. And I owed it to them to push harder.

Which led to-

-?I wonder if I can write a press release for Bleeding Cool.?

I might have sucked at that. But as a result I get the privilege of addressing you fine folk now.

At first, I thought the worst that could happen is I?d never get a response.

I was wrong.

So very wrong.

Being told I could only get here if I wrote a piece myself is so much more terrifying.

(Have I mentioned that the majority of my creator owned work is silent? Clearly words are not my strong suit.)

Nothing could have made me want to crawl in a hole more.

But a gauntlet had been thrown down.

And I asked for this.

I poked around and got what I wanted, just not the way I thought I wanted it.

It?s probably better that way.

My name is Meredith McClaren.

I comic to speak and I might be falling face first into a good career at it.

I?m quiet and anxious and I over-think everything.

I have no contingency plan.

And that?s worked out pretty well.

-Meredith McClaren
Collectors Cornered is an occasional video column, filmed inside Collectors Corner in Baltimore. Join us every week as we discuss comic book news from a different point of view and get instant feedback from real customers on New Comics Day, as we literally corner them and and ask questions about comic books and related topics. Unscripted, reality CC.

This Installment we cover Collectors Con MD, Our First attempt as a Store at Organizing and running our own Pop Culture Convention. The goal was to cover more than just comic books and try to encapsulate more of the pop culture genre from comics to games, toys and beyond. We worked hard to bring together local, regional and out of state vendors selling everything from Arts & Crafts to Comic Books, video games and everything in between. We set up our own booth and staffed the Con with volunteers waiting for fans to pour in. Almost 400 attendees came through the doors and including tons of costumed kids and adults ready to compete in our cosplay contest and shop. Artists and Creators set up in Artists Alley including HC Noel, GCP Comics, Vince Sneed, Rob Emm, Greg LaRocque, Marc Hempel, Neil Vokes, JT Krul, Fred Van Lente, Mike Riley, Matt Heuston & David Crispino (CC's Store Manager).

Comic Book Men's co-star Robert Bruce not only joined us as a Vendor in the Dealer's Room but hosted a Panel talking about collecting and pop culture.

We also featured panels from local film makers, Aspen Comics with JT Krul, IDW Comics with Fred Van Lente and hosted Super Art Fight and a super cool costume contest too.

Huge Thanks to our Sponsors, Geppis Entertainment Museum, League of Hot Geeks & JK Cosplay!

We are already planning the next show, Time and Date TBA.

Orlando Baez writes;

I?m the artist of the recently released Alterna Comics title ?Noctua,? written by Andrew M. Henderson and now available on ComiXology. ?Noctua? is a fresh spin on an old tale, redefining and modernizing the Vampire genre through a unique blend of crime, horror, and sci-fi. Summed up in an elevator pitch, ?Noctua? is BLADE meets DAYBREAKERS meets THE PUNISHER meets LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL meets TRUE BLOOD. The comic takes the oversaturated Vampire genre and spins it on its head. Rather than being myths and legends, the Vampires of this world are real people. Those infected with HVV, or the Human-Vampiric-Virus, form their own special minority within society, known as Transhumans. These Transhumans are integrated skeptically into the mainstream world, forced to fight for rights they once had but have no longer. Just like humans, there are good ones and there are bad ones. But Noctua...he says, ?F**k em' all!? If Frank Castle and Eric Brooks could have a child, he'd probably be something like Solomon Matheson...the alter-ego of our predatory anti-hero. You can see a trailer for the project here:

I work as a penciller and inker at night along with a day job, so I know the rigors and plight of the indie artist all too well. I do what I do because it?s always been a passion of mine. Drawing comics has always been my dream and I began to hone my craft and take thing seriously around high school. I was self-taught and learned by drawing and copying my favorite Marvel comic book heroes. My inspiration came from titans such as Humberto Ramos, Frank Miller, Art Adams, and Rich Buckler, among others. My first published experience came in 2007. It was an indie comic book entitled,?Family Bones,? written by Shawn Granger and published by King Tractor Press. After that in 2008 came one of my biggest major credits, entitled ?Pirat Tales,? written by Dan Taylor, colored by Juan Mar, and published by IDW. My most recent title before ?Noctua? was as penciller and Inker on a short 6 page story, ?Left me for Dead,? written by Andrew M. Henderson for Megabook Vol. #2, published by CE Publishing . After that, I?ve been concentrating on ?Noctua? with Andrew.

Sequential art is not an easy craft to master. It takes time, patience, and planning for what you put on an ?11x17? piece of bristol paper. It requires the utmost patience and dedication. But at the end of the day, it?s all worth it. One of the most gratifying things to me about drawing comics is seeing my work brought to life through the art of collaboration. Seeing your work colored and then lettered and then published in a finished book?there?s no bigger thrill for me.One day I?d love to work for DC or Marvel. My dream job would be to draw for my favorite title, ?Hulk.? Another dream of mine is one day seeing a project I worked on make it to the big screen. I think with ?Noctua,? I might one day get to see that dream come to life.
The micro-blogging network sometimes seemingly to be supported by pure feels, is deemed worth that amount by Yahoo, a company which, well, sorry can anyone remind me what Yahoo do these days? So well done Tumblrers, showing us how much you care has made some people very rich. Anyway, Tumblr has reacted as you might expect.

Strapping On A Helmet To Talk To Camilla d'Errico

Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/05/Tanpopo_by_camilladerrico.jpg ...

Richard Caldwell writes;

Camilla d'Errico is a highly skilled and impressively imaginative artist. Freely exploring multiple mediums with multiple media, among her many in-progress projects is illustrating the core thread to the DRAVN project, currently taking over the pages of Heavy Metal.

Was a creative spirit fostered in your childhood? Do you feel that artists can be especially sensitive to their formative environments?

My childhood was full of Saturday morning cartoons, and filled with the company of many children. I was always encouraged by my mother to draw and be creative, she would teach me how to draw animals along with the other children in her daycare.

I'm not sure whether being an artist made me more sensitive to my surroundings, but I do think that the 80s was a great time to be a kid. There were so many cartoons and shows for kids that encouraged strong morals and they did it in a way that was very relatable. I do think that my own environment helped me become the artist I am today, so it could be true for others as well.

Were comic books what led you to graphic arts specifically? Does your creativity spill over into other mediums?

I have a lot of ways that I channel my creativity, I draw, paint, sculpt, fashion design, and never stop trying new mediums. Graphic design was one way for me to focus my ideas, to see the printed media in a new way and to understand the mechanics behind the art. My love for comics has led me to try 3D animation, fine arts and graphic design. I can't help but continually expand my knowledge in multiple medias.

What was your first impression upon hearing about the DRAVN project?

I was really excited! This was right up my alley, as it's a great mix of steampunk, teenage drama, sci-fi, and history. I couldn't dream up a better combo. I really liked Jesse as well, his enthusiasm and creativity were infectious and I was on board immediately.

As the character whose segments you are illustrating is in many ways the focal point connecting the assorted stories through time together, does it feel like you're fronting a band? Was she your preference, of the diversive cast?

Britney was the first character conceived in the DRAVN project and the one that Jesse brought to me, so I do feel, in a way, that I was at the forefront of the project. I didn't have a choice who I would draw, but that doesn't matter because I feel very attached to Britney and her story.

What was the most challenging aspect for you, in your contributions to this world-building?

To create a character that was average but that stands out. Britney is limited by her circumstances, so she can't have movie star hair or an outfit that was striking and truly harajuku or even remotely well put together. She's a poor kid, in a small town, without the kind of lifestyle that lends itself to beauty. Unlike the other comic heroes out there, Britney doesn't have the perfect look, so it's refreshing, but challenging because people want to be attracted to their heroes, they want someone to aspire to be. Perfect body, perfect hair, perfect fashion. I think creating a world and characters outside a metropolis of fashion is great and refreshing but also challenging.

DRAVN creator Jesse Negron is new to comics, but not at all new as a writer or storyteller. As large as the premise is, and considering the creators involved reside all around the globe, was it the slightest bit surprising to see how everything came together like so? Is this the largest project you've thus far worked on?

Jesse's mind is boggling! He has an absolutely incredible vision and I think he's done a beautiful job bringing it to life and factoring in all the various layers to the DRAVN world. It is definitely one of the biggest projects I've ever worked on, but I also work in the gaming industry, so I'm used to projects with large worlds. It was definitely a ride to see DRAVN come together, just when you thought Jesse had finished, he'd throw in another layer that would expand and bring the world to a new creative turn.

As DRAVN is set to expand further, and quite possibly breach into other mediums as well, can fans expect you to be a part of all this for the long haul?

I will work on this project until Jesse doesn't want me anymore. I've been there since the beginning and I hope to continue to work on it in the future. But realistically, it also depends on the other projects that I am working on, sometimes it's all about the timing.

Where do your interests lay outside of the Arts? How do you unwind?

I love movies and audiobooks, it's a great escape from reality. Sometimes all I want to do is step into another world and experience life outside of our own reality. I love to obsess about certain characters and stories, but at the end of the day what I use to unwind is actually my own project Tanpopo. Since Tanpopo is based on literature, and I'm a lit nut, I can spend hours reading through poems and plays and project my characters into them.

Do you have your own magnum opus in mind?

I do, its called Helmetgirls. This is an idea that began with individual paintings in which I depicted a girl with a gargantuan headgear. I love these girls, and I want to create a graphic novel based on one segment of their universe. It's a project that I have been conceiving for the past six years and I hope to get it underway once I complete my initial series Tanpopo.

From what I've seen, your visual style is very unique, with it being a bit difficult to figure your points of influence. Is originality a virtue in your world view? What tools of the trade do you make work?

Absolutely, originality is a huge point in the artistic world. It's okay to emulate in the beginning, but to be creative you have to create what's in your own head, not what's in someone else's. I have experienced the occasional oddity, when two people in two different places come up with the same idea. It's so strange and rare, and it's happened to me. There's really nothing you can do at that point but high five and move on.

I use non-repro blue pencils to outline my comic work then I use bic pens to do the inking, as well as a few other pens I randomly buy at the art store. I'm in love with the look of a bic, it's sketchy but solid, and allows me to create really organic line work. And I use water soluble oils by Holbein to do my paintings- it's an amazing medium that I highly recommend.

If you could collaborate with any artist of any medium, living or dead, who would it be?

Raphael, hands down. I'm in love with his portraits, with how he saw the human form. He's one of the great masters, and he only lived to be 37, so can you imagine what kind of mindset he had? I do. And I would love to spend a day learning from him.

Does the future feel like a positive place, or should we all stock up on duct tape?

If you mean the future of mankind, well, I've already got my zombie kit ready to go. I would love our species to wake up and realize just how destructive it is and learn from the mistakes that were made to better ourselves and take care of our planet, but it seems humans just can't help but be consumptive. There are a lot of organizations doing good in the world, saving ecosystems and animals and I support them as much as possible, I have monthly charities to help support them, and help spread awareness.
