How Marvel And DC Get Retailers To Order More Comics

With Justice League Of America #1 soon to launch, DC Comics are keen to try and capture a little of that lightning and inject it into other titles.

Such as the comics Green Arrow , Katana, Justice League of America?s Vibe, all featuring characters now part of Justice League Of America. If you hadn't guessed that from the title of Vibe's book.

So DC Comics are offering an incentive to retailers to stock up on titles, an extra 15% on top of the discount they already get?* if they match 75% of orders for Justice League Of America #1 with their orders for Green Arrow #17, Katana #1 and Justice League of America?s Vibe #1.

This will enable retailers to get a better idea of the demand for these comics, as well as giving them added incentive to hand sell them to customers, because their profitability is greater compares to other comics on the stands.

It does also mean there might be a rather large amount of Justice League of America?s Vibe #1 in the back issue bins this summer.

Meanwhile Marvel is doing the same with some of their titles.

The launch of Fearless Defenders, which may suffer sales from conservative sources by having an all-female cast and Defenders in the title

But Marvel will give retailers an extra 15% if they exceed 150% of their orders of AvX Vs. #6?* on Fearless Defenders #1, 10% for 125% and 5% for 115%. And just matching AvX Vs. #6 means they can order as much of the Skottie Young Baby variant on top.

For New Avengers #3, they'll give the same discounts, matched to 175%, 150% and 125% of AvX Vs. #6 while Superior Spider-Man #3 is matched against Avengers Vs. X-Men #11 for 150% for 10% off and?* 115% for 5% off.

Can't comment on the retailer end but as a consumer I've made the choice that all new series I buy will be digital. I read a ton of titles a month and just recently switched over all the Superman & Batman titles I read to digital. BUT...since I always get a 20% discount off cover at my local comic shop I wait one month til DC drops the price a buck to make this switch essentially cost neutral for me (slightly better...but then again I don't actually "own" a physical or pdf copy of the book which I'm fine with and is a risk I'm willing to assume for the price). I wonder if DC and Marvel should be looking at promo pricing first issues of these copies in digital form to incent the digital customers to sample these series who won't care so much about how many physical issues are sitting on a rack to be drawn in . A few years ago the 10 cent & $1 issues were all the rage...I wonder if they should be following this format more, especially in digital if they want the format grow quickly.

As a complete aside....Needless to say Marvel has dropped completely off my "new comics" reading list. They don't decrease the price of their digital comics by a buck the month after they're released. Since I don't pay full cover for a physical copy at my local comic shop, and I've chosen not to buy any new print series, they have now dopped off my consideration as I refuse to pay full price for digital. I did just snatch up a bunch of Mark Waid Daredevil issues for 99 cents on a recent Comixology sale, so that seems to be my purchase cycle with Marvel. I'll buy chuncks of series that are proven winners at an even deeper discount less frequently and provide less profit for them. I wish they would follow the DC pricing pattern...I'd probably sample at least half a dozen Marvel Now titles but I specifically set up my own new buying rules to control my costs and the physical pileup of comics in my home.

Eventually I'll transition out of physical comics entirely...assuming I continue to gain some savings on digital.

I can only speak for us but for us there was a point where it became completely wwhite noise and we simply ignore it and just order what we need, want and think we can sell. The task I'm doing the most with Marvel's mails is scrolling to the importants news such as:

Can't comment on the retailer end but as a consumer I've made the choice that all new series I buy will be digital. I read a ton of titles a month and just recently switched over all the Superman & Batman titles I read to digital. BUT...since I always get a 20% discount off cover at my local comic shop I wait one month til DC drops the price a buck to make this switch essentially cost neutral for me (slightly better...but then again I don't actually "own" a physical or pdf copy of the book which I'm fine with and is a risk I'm willing to assume for the price). I wonder if DC and Marvel should be looking at promo pricing first issues of these copies in digital form to incent the digital customers to sample these series who won't care so much about how many physical issues are sitting on a rack to be drawn in . A few years ago the 10 cent & $1 issues were all the rage...I wonder if they should be following this format more, especially in digital if they want the format grow quickly.

As a complete aside....Needless to say Marvel has dropped completely off my "new comics" reading list. They don't decrease the price of their digital comics by a buck the month after they're released. Since I don't pay full cover for a physical copy at my local comic shop, and I've chosen not to buy any new print series, they have now dopped off my consideration as I refuse to pay full price for digital. I did just snatch up a bunch of Mark Waid Daredevil issues for 99 cents on a recent Comixology sale, so that seems to be my purchase cycle with Marvel. I'll buy chuncks of series that are proven winners at an even deeper discount less frequently and provide less profit for them. I wish they would follow the DC pricing pattern...I'd probably sample at least half a dozen Marvel Now titles but I specifically set up my own new buying rules to control my costs and the physical pileup of comics in my home.

Eventually I'll transition out of physical comics entirely...assuming I continue to gain some savings on digital.

Two thoughts:
1. Does your former LCS have a comixology storefront? They get a commission on books purchased through that site. You can still support them and get the books at a discount...

2. Marvel's $3.99 titles have digital copy codes. Plenty of people buy and trade them, either here or on ebay. You can more orless stay current on the big books for roughly $1 an issue(which has evolved into the going rate for code only deals). AND, you can help your LCS earn 50 cents per code by selecting it as your store of choice on www.marvel.com/redeem

I'm all for a bigger discount, but most of these are based on numbers that the books are extremely unlikely to sell (does anyone think Vibe has a snowball's chance in Hell of selling 75% of JLA? It will be lucky to pull off 15%). They also reward retailers who underordered the qualifier (for example, if the retailer lowballed their orders on AvX Versus, they now have an easier time making most of Marvel's minimums than if they "had faith" in that title and ordered higher on it.)

Not to mention, I have spend literally hours at the FOC (Final Order Cut-off) doing the Math to see if I should bother jumping through Marvel's hoops. I often feel like they've given me a vest and a fez and are throwing peanuts while playing an acordian while I clash cymbals (if you get my over-extended drift) "Ooh-oooh!"

If they tried this kind of promotion here-and-there (to promote a possibly under-ordered title, like the above article describes) it wouldn't be so bad, but Marvel's been doing it on EVERY NOW! book.

Yes, retailers have a financial incentive to push these books, but any retailer who tries to talk a customer into Katana is just going to lose that customer's trust after he or she reads it.

This. Couldn't agree more. Say I'm right, say I'm wrong. Call me smart, call me stupid. Call me a masochist. But I have purchased at least the first 3 issues of EVERY DC title released since the beginning of the New 52.

This is the first title where I said, "Nah, I'll pass". Now that is saying something.

All that being said, just watch, Vibe#1 will be one of the most critically-acclaimed, difficult-to-find-issues that DC will publish this decade. <sigh>
