Default Lady Mechanika Breaks Up With Aspen

I had a conversation with Aspen people at New York Comic Con where they admitted that, basically, Lady Mechanika sold for them, but they'd found it hard to transfer that excitement to other comics, at least as far as the direct market was concerned.

It looks like it might get a little harder. Aspen has issued the following press release that they and Lady Mechanika creator Joe Benitez have parted company.

And it reads like the press release from a Hollywood couple who have just realised that only one of them is actually a Scientologist.

Aspen and Joe Benitez announce they have amicably separated their publishing interests by mutual agreement. Peter Steigerwald, Aspen MLT, Inc. Co-Owner and frequent artistic collaborator with Joe Benitez, had this to say:

?We [Aspen] have greatly appreciatedJoe?s time here with us andhis involvement and promotion of Aspen Comics over the years. Joe and I have discussed his future plans and his desireto venture out on his own.As many know, ten years ago our Founder, Michael Turner, took a similar positionand stepped away from his publisher, takingfull publishing control of his own creations by founding Aspen Comics. We wish Joe well, and hope for a bright future for him and his creations, including Lady Mechanika. This has been a friendly separation and I plan on continuing to be there for him as colorist and collaborator as he wraps up hisLady Mechanikaseries. Aspen will be happy to provide any support he needs as he steps out on his own. I?ve beenpersonalfriends with Joe for nearly 20 years and I know this has long been a hope for him?to be able to found his ownhome for his creative visions.?

?Aspen has an ambitious schedule next year withour ?10 for 10? initiative along withFathom?s 15yearanniversary,and we wanted both Aspen and Joe to start 2013 out on the right foot.?

The Lady Mechanika series will continue according to the plans of Joe Benitez.

Joe had this to say:

?I am both anxious and excited to be venturing out on my own with Lady Mechanika. Aspen has been very supportive and I am and always will be grateful to them for giving Lady Mechanika her first home. As I?ve stated in the past, working with Peter has been one of the highlights of my career. He is an incredible talent whom I greatly admire and respect, and I hope to continue working with him on Lady Mechanika as well as other future projects.

I wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the fans and retailers for their patience and support. I hope you will continue to bear with me during this transitional period. My plans for Lady Mechanika include finishing ?The Mystery of the Mechanical Corpse? this upcoming year and also launching a monthly Lady Mechanika ongoing series.

May 2013 bring success and prosperity to both Lady Mechanika and Aspen. Let?s go make some great comics!?

I've been enjoying the series (as sporadic as it has been) and I hope this separation won't cause it to be even later. Joe is a great artist so I'm willing to wait to see his art but man months between issues is a bit much.

I think the biggest problem with Lady Mechanika is that there's only been three issues (issues #0, #1, and #2) in the past two or three years. Great book, but there have quite a few months I've forgotten about it. Definitely wish Joe the best, but this might be a project better served as a graphic novel or some other limited run format.

Sorry, but this seems a bit ridiculous. Joe has managed to make what? 3 issues so far? And now he wants a monthly in 2013? Not with him drawing it.

I always liked Joe's style and bought most of his work, I like the Steampunk setting for LM a lot, but the time between issues of Lady Mechanika was already ridiculous, I can't really see how a comic that arrives so sporadically can make enough of an impact to be selfpublished and I see a new Battle Chasers in development (just without similar early success).
He really should have just finished the first arc with Aspen, do some work in preparation and if he truly wants to self-publish wait until he has a few issues ready for the printers.
PLEASE CONSIDER putting SilverSmurfer on ignore due to his factually incorrect and hysteric claim that "Uber" is a "historically revisionist nazi fantasy," and that we should boycott Avatar for it.
Thank you for your Considerations.

I'm not understanding what that means.

Lady Mechanika sold, but it didn't help the rest of their line, that's how I read it. Still not sure why it was supposed to.

NEWS FLASH ASPEN
Lady Mechanika and Idolized are the only books you make that aren't complete and utter trash. i wouldn't even line a bird cage with the other titles you publish. you can't seriously have the idea people want to read what's effectively porn with less plot.

Does this mean that we might actually see another issue at some point? To be honest, for as much as I enjoyed what has already been published, I doubt I will buy any more single issues for fear it will never get finished. I might consider it in trade form if it is ever released but at this point only a finished product will get my money.

I don't know. I have been waiting so long for this series to come out, I don't think I'll bother picking up a 'supposed' monthly series, even though I do like the character.
