It was a funny meme that was shared -- END OF STORY.

I hate to take the guy's side on this (because usually it's more polite to agree with the girl) - but Jennifer was taken this way out of proportion, and any defense, explanation, apology, ect has been offered. There are at least a dozen points where Dirk is accepting of a truce over the issue - but Jennifer keeps going back to her original over-wrought complaint. Seriously - the person coming off as more unprofessional IS the irrational one that continues the argument into perpetuity. Not once did Dirk swear at her, or argue that she is incorrect. JEEZ! LET IT GO! Stop responding to her complaints, Dirk!

Not cool on Manning's part on different levels.

His wording is poor. It actually reminds of me Rush Limbaugh calling Sandra Fluke a slut cause she takes birth control pills. Also, great way to alienate a demographic. And his defense of his meme is just lame and pathetic. He got caught called out and he just made shit worse.

I actually lost a real life friend- real life, personal friend -due to the same exact meme.

I almost started laughing when I saw this.

As far as the meme goes. I am a gay man. I love women, most of my friends are women. I love other nerds. I love female nerds. My best friend is a female nerd. My other best friend, too, is a female nerd. When I posted this on my Facebook page it received four likes... From female nerds.

Girls with no interest in gaming, sci-fi, chemistry, comic books, or any other number of pieces of nerd subculture are not nerds. There's no inherent shame in that. But when a girl who isn't a nerd puts on sexy clothing and then glasses and says 'nerd'... I'd think women especially would be offended, as it's sort of just a sad cry for attention, or a pose for identity that isn't really there.

For the record: My real life friend who threw a tantrum at me over this image is a white heterosexual male who, nearing the age of thirty, from a privileged background. According to him this meme goes 'beyond the pale' and makes me a misogynist, watching Girls makes me racist because the characters are all white (though I'm pretty certain this same person has no actual friends of any color), and, him knowing how gay I am, he still finds me mildly homophobic. The point here is not to rant about this loser douche, but to say that, perhaps, the people furthest removed from suffering any kind of oppression are often the first to point their fingers at perceived slights.

Appeasing this fringe lunatic by any means is in itself lunacy. If you see something like that and find it detrimental to the societal conversation, throwing a big fucking baby tantrum about it is significantly less productive than contacting the person in a private message and addressing why you find it so terrible. Just because someone might be in the right doesn't mean she's not being as much a part of the problem as anybody else. Last time I checked, nobody has ever contributed to intellectual discourse by going in guns blazing.

Quoted for absolute truth. Well said, JtB. Spot on. With email, PMs, and all sorts of communication alternatives available, throwing a hissy in public simply proves you would rather have the adulation and attention for your crusading opinions than actually deal in a rational manner with the target of your perceived insult.
