Lemire And Suayan Wrap Up Bloodshot Island And Move Towards Something Much Bigger

The lastest story arc for Bloodshot Reborn has been Bloodshot Island and features the introduction of Deathmate. The character is named after the 90's crossover series between Valiant and Image comics. But there is a lot more to her than just a new characters.

Spoilers… so bail now if you haven't been reading the series.

If you're sure…

What we learned in issue 16 is that Deathmate is the Kay McHenry, the mystic known as Geomancer who fell in love with Ray Garrison and stripped him of the nanites before she died. Project Rising Spirit has reincarnated her as the ultimate killing machine and turned her on all of the Bloodshots they have to train her. That's the secret of the island. Now Ray has a plan to get himself, Kay and all of the out-of-date Bloodshot models that came before him of the island.

The new issue brings everything to a head. PRS has a project that will cause a lot of death and position them as a world power. They've brought former Agent Diana Festival and Magic to the bunker as well. But the bunker is not on the island. And what we learn is that the whole thing was a war game and now that PRS is done with the game and ready for the war… they're done with the Bloodshots.

This continues to be one of the best books not only from Valiant, but on the market today. Jeff Lemire's storytelling gives the reader enough to keep them hooked but not so much that you can figure out what's next. And Mico Suayan's art is just phenomenal. I was asked on Monday by someone who I can't mention yet… what were my two favorite Valiant titles and without hesitation I said Bloodshot and Ninjak. This story arc is a great example of why that is.
