Microsoft Exec Says The PlayStation Pro's Specs Won't Be Able To Hit True 4K Like Project Scorpio

Project Scorpio-970-80

The 'console war' has seemingly cooled a little bit, at least concerning executives shooting on each other, since the current gen consoles came out. In fact, Xbox Boss Phil Spencer has actively tired to cool things between Microsoft and Sony fans before.

However, with the upcoming console iterations, we are most defintely going to see a little shade thrown around. Case and point, We saw just a hint of that from Xbox's Albert Penello in an interview with Eurogamer. While it is no secret that the PlayStation Pro is going to be weaker than Project Scorpio, Pennello has said that he doesn't expect Sony's console to be capable of True 4K.

He said:

I think there are a lot of caveats they're giving customers right now around 4K. They're talking about checkerboard rendering and up-scaling and things like that. There are just a lot of asterisks in their marketing around 4K, which is interesting because when we thought about what spec we wanted for Scorpio, we were very clear we wanted developers to take their Xbox One engines and render them in native, true 4K.

That was why we picked the number [6 teraflops], that's why we have the memory bandwidth we have, that's why we have the teraflops we have, because it's what we heard from game developers was required to achieve native 4K.

While the PlayStation Pro not being capable of true 4K is nothing new, this is a pretty direct slam on the console by the competition, and they are entirely right. I personally think Project Scorpio is in a better place right now, with a whole year to figure out how to package it. I truely am intrigued to see this play out.
